My card scanned perfectly at two bars but failed every time at a specific club I tried three times. I spent a couple weeks looking into why and the answer was more interesting than I expected.
The venue's scanner made the difference
After talking to someone who works at that club, I learned they use a different scanning app than most venues — one that attempts a real-time query against state DMV records rather than just decoding the PDF417 barcode locally. When your ID data cannot be found in the query result, the app shows a failed verification even if the barcode itself decoded correctly.
Most venue ID scanners only do local barcode decoding — they read the data encoded in the PDF417 and display it on screen so a human can verify it matches the card. These scanners work on any ID with a correctly formatted barcode. The DMV-query scanners are less common but are appearing at higher-end venues in some states.
How to tell which type of scanner a venue uses
You cannot tell from the outside. The apps look similar and bouncers rarely know which type they are using. The tell is in the failure mode: if the scanner says something like "verification failed" or "ID not found" rather than just displaying your information, it is probably attempting a live query.
What this means practically
A correctly encoded PDF417 barcode is sufficient for the vast majority of venues. The real-time query scanners are still a minority but they are growing. Venues with strict age verification requirements or that have faced regulatory scrutiny are more likely to have upgraded to these systems.
If a card fails at one venue but works at others, the scanner type is likely the variable, not the card. Understanding this removes a lot of the guesswork about what is actually wrong when a scan fails.
