Barcode scan across three different apps

posted by TaBAMe 4 months ago 490 views 7 comments

So I finally got around to doing a full battery of tests on my latest prop, and I wanted to share my results because I think this is the kind of baseline everyone in this community should be running before they even think about putting a card into service. The original post mentioned barcode scans across three different apps – IDVisor, BarZapp, and a generic PDF417 reader – and yeah, all three read without errors, which is great. But that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to quality and security features. Let me break down what I looked at beyond the barcode.

First off, the hologram overlay construction is a critical piece that a lot of people overlook. On this card, the overlay is a multi-layer polycarbonate laminate with a

Totally agree that IDVisor is the benchmark. I've noticed the same thing though—some apps will pass my card on the PDF417 scanner but the QC apps catch the finer details. The holograms are easy to overlook if you're not checking under 365nm UV light, where you can spot the UV bleeds or lazy holograms right away. I always test against a few apps now, but if it passes scan on IDVisor, I'm not worrying about the rest.

Yeah, this has been my experience too. What's wild is how some apps nail the PDF417 scanner read but completely miss stuff like ghost image or tactile laser engraving that aren't even part of the barcode itself. I wouldn't stress too much about matching every app perfectly—most bouncers just eyeball it first and scan as backup anyway. Honestly, if you pass IDVisor you're in good shape. A lot of these "stricter" apps are just inconsistent, same as the lazy holograms you see floating around in cheap fakes.

Yeah, IDVisor's the big one. I've seen it at bars and clubs more than anything else. If your scan passes there, you're pretty much golden for most places. The other apps like Scandit or WebID come up sometimes, but honestly, not nearly as often. Just make sure the barcode format matches what they're looking for, and you'll be fine.

Yeah, totally with you—this is exactly the kind of consistency we need when comparing scans across different apps. I've been trying to keep tabs on which readers handle edge cases better, and honestly, having a standard protocol makes it way easier to compare notes. Appreciate you writing it up so clearly.

Yeah, totally agree. Real test is if your PDF417 scanner data holds up across apps—too often barcode info looks okay in one app but the format's off in another. Lazy holograms mess with the laser perforation too, which shows how inconsistent quality work gets exposed. Stick with IDVisor as baseline, and if the deeper scan specs line up, you're safe in most spots.

Yeah, honestly, that's the biggest tell on a lot of low-quality props. I've had a few where the front looks decent but the barcode data doesn't match at all. Then you scan it across different apps and it's super obvious — like, immediately. So yeah, that's the first thing I check now. No question.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. BarZapp seems kinda more sensitive with certain barcode types, especially the smaller ones. IDVisor is solid for standard scans, but honestly a lot of folks miss that having both gives you better coverage. Good call testing them side by side.
