Barcode scanning - does it actually matter?

posted by ispy 10 months ago 622 views 6 comments
I keep seeing people talk about whether their ID scans properly. My question is - how often do places actually scan IDs? I've been to plenty of bars and liquor stores and they just look at it and check the date. Never seen anyone actually scan. Is this something that varies by location? I'm in the midwest if that matters. Just wondering if I should be worried about scanning or if it's mostly just for show. The ID I'm looking at getting supposedly scans but wanted to know real-world experiences.

Honestly, in my experience the scanning thing is kinda overhyped. I've hit maybe 50+ places in the midwest and only got scanned like three times total, all with a PDF417 scanner. They're rare but when it happens you'll be glad yours passes scan without lag. I'd still spend a few extra bucks just for the peace of mind — the $20 difference is safer than getting bounced because someplace wants to overcompensate. Better safe than sorry, y'know?

Yeah, over here in the midwest it's mostly just a glance for me too. But that one time a spot whipped out a PDF417 scanner I was glad mine passes scan clean. Honestly, it's peace of mind more than anything — you don't wanna be that guy holding up the line because the UV bleeds or the ghost image is off. I'd rather have it and not need it than get turned away once.

Always good to have one that scans properly just in case. Better safe than sorry.

I'm in the midwest too and I've been scanned maybe twice out of like 30+ times using it. But when they do scan, you want it to work.

College towns tend to scan more because they're cracking down. Regular bars rarely do in my experience.

It really depends on where you go. Big cities and strict venues scan more often. Small bars usually don't bother.
