After a barcode failure at a venue I wanted to understand exactly what had gone wrong. Went through a systematic troubleshooting process. Here is the procedure if you encounter the same issue.
Step 1: Test with multiple scanner apps
Download two or three barcode scanning apps and test your card with each. I use Cognex Mobile Barcode Scanner, QR & Barcode Scanner by Gamma Play, and the iOS built-in camera barcode reading. If the barcode fails on all three apps, the barcode itself is the problem. If it succeeds on some but not others, the issue is app-specific and the card is probably fine for most venue scanners.
Step 2: Check scan conditions
PDF417 barcodes require adequate lighting and a camera held steady and parallel to the card. Testing in low light with a shaky hold produces false negatives. Test in good lighting with your phone resting on a flat surface and the card held flat beneath it. If the barcode reads under these ideal conditions but not under normal conditions, the issue is barcode print quality rather than encoding — a faint or low-contrast barcode requires better conditions to decode.
Step 3: Decode the barcode data
If the barcode scans, use an AAMVA barcode parser to read the encoded data. Several free tools exist online that decode AAMVA-format barcodes and display each field separately. Check that the name, date of birth, and license number fields match the printed card face. Discrepancies between barcode data and printed data are a production error that some venue scanners will flag.
Step 4: Identify the failure mode
If the barcode does not scan under any conditions, it may be damaged (surface scratches obscuring the barcode area), encoded incorrectly (format errors in the data), or simply printed at insufficient resolution. Photographs of the barcode under good lighting sent to the vendor will usually get a fast diagnosis and replacement offer if there is a production defect.
