Blacklight Test - What Should I See on My ID?

posted by oegriffo 9 months ago 845 views 4 comments

Just got my ID and wanted to test it under blacklight before using it. What exactly am I looking for?

I have a UV flashlight. When I shine it on the ID I see some things glow but I'm not sure if it's correct or not.

Questions:

  • What parts should glow?
  • What color should the UV features be?
  • How bright should they be?

Perfect, mine has all of that. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't missing anything obvious. Thanks!

Yeah, you're right to start with the blacklight test, but honestly, it really depends on the issuing state. Every state has its own UV design—some use a simple state seal that glows. Others have repeating patterns like "WA" or "CA" running across the whole card. And a few even have multi-color UV or hidden images that only show under longwave. If you're checking a fake, the first step is to look up reference images of the real state's UV for comparison. Even the best reps sometimes get the color slightly off or use a UV ink that's too bright or too dim compared to the genuine article.

But honestly, blacklight alone isn't enough to judge the whole ID. I've seen fakes that pass UV perfectly but totally flop on hologram overlay construction—the clear laminate layer with the state-specific hologram. That's where you'll want to look for proper depth, seamless lamination, and no bubbles or peeling at the edges. The ghost image on most modern IDs should also be sharp and match the main photo in tone, not just a faded blob. Perforation patterns, like the tiny holes in states like Ohio or Pennsylvania, need to be clean and evenly spaced. You don't want them jagged or punched too deep. All those things won't show up under blacklight, but they're just as critical for passing a real check.

UV detail accuracy is a whole rabbit hole too. Some states embed fine-line patterns or microtext that only fluoresces—so if your UV test shows a solid block instead of those tiny lines, that's a red flag. I always run a UV test alongside a loupe check and a scanner test. For scanner results, if the barcode scans and returns a valid template that matches the visual data (name, DOB, address), you're in decent shape, but if the magstripe fails or the barcode was printed instead of encoded, then even perfect UV won't save you. Just my two cents—so what state are you working on? That'll narrow down exactly what UV features you should be seeing.

It's Ohio. I see a faint pattern and the state seal glows.

Ohio should have:

  • State seal in bright UV ink
  • Ghost image that appears under UV
  • DOB should glow

If you see these, you're good. Don't worry if it's not super bright - real IDs vary too.
