Box scanner results - passed! - thoughts?
Nice, congrats on the pass! PA’s definitely been reliable lately—my PDF417 scanner results were spot on too. One thing I'd add: check the tactile laser engraving under a strong light before you rely on it. I’ve seen some batches where it’s decent but a little shallow, and that’s the kind of detail that gets scrutinized. Also keep an eye on the ghost image if yours has one—ours was subtle but clear enough. Better to flag it now than when someone runs a full check.
Yeah, I’ve noticed that too — PA stuff tends to hold up fine with scanners and everything. The PDF417 scanner results came back clean on mine, which was a relief. UV bleeds have been my main concern lately though; popped one under 365nm UV light and it’s amazing how visible lazy holograms or ghost image issues can get. Worth a check before you’re caught out.
I've had good luck with PA stuff too — their PDF417 scanner results are usually spot on. Make sure you check yours under a 365nm UV light though; some issues like UV bleeds can slip past the box scanner. Had a batch once where the ghost image looked clean under normal light, but the UV revealed lazy holograms. Always worth a double-check if you can, saves the headache later.
Thanks for the heads up! Which city was this in? I just got my own box scanner results back and passed too, so I figured I'd drop some observations on the quality side while it's still fresh. Honestly, a lot of people gloss over the finer details until something fails, so hopefully this helps someone else avoid that.
First off, the hologram overlay. So on mine, the laminate isn't perfectly flush with the card stock – there's a very slight tactile ridge if you run your nail over it. That's actually a good sign because legit state IDs often have that same subtle raised border from the lamination process. The overlay itself has decent color shifting under a desk lamp, going from a greenish-gold to a pale blue as you tilt it. No major air bubbles, but I did notice a tiny dust speck trapped near the bottom edge – not a dealbreaker, but definitely something to keep an eye on for future batches.
Ghost image clarity was honestly surprisingly solid. The ghost is a lighter version of the main portrait, placed to the right on mine, and it aligns properly with the background. No ugly double edges or weird halos around the outline. Under direct sunlight it's more visible than under fluorescent lights, which is pretty standard. The key test for me was seeing if the ghost image holds up when you rotate the card – it stays crisp rather than washing out completely, so the microprinting in that area is likely doing its job.
The perforation pattern quality is where I was most nervous, honestly. Holes are cleanly punched with no ragged plastic bits hanging off, and they're evenly spaced in a straight line across the top. I measured them roughly with a ruler – diameters look consistent, maybe around 1/16 inch, and the spacing between each hole is uniform. One thing I'd check: make sure the perforations are actually through both layers (laminate and core) and not just surface-level. Mine passed that check, and the holes line up with the birthdate printed below, which is a common security feature on real IDs from certain states.
UV detail accuracy – I hit it with a cheap 365nm light and the state seal lit up where it should. The UV overlay isn't perfectly opaque – you can still faintly see the background design through it, which is correct. There's also a secondary UV element near the photo – a repeating pattern of the state abbreviation that glows evenly without blotches. No UV ink bleeding into non-UV areas, and the response is immediate with no ghosting after I turn the light off.
As for the scanner test itself, it went through on the first swipe. The barcode on the back (PDF417) decoded cleanly – the scanner software pulled up all the encoded data: name, address, DOB, height, weight, eye color, and the issue/expiration dates. Everything matched what's printed on the front. The magstripe also read, though I didn't have a way to verify the track data beyond a simple swipe test at a store that uses those ID scanners. No errors flagged, no "invalid" pop-ups.
Overall I'm pleased, but the hologram dust speck and that ridge on the laminate make me want to compare with a few more examples from the same source. If you've got any insight on how the city you're in handles box scanners – like whether they use handheld units versus countertop integrated models – that could help me prep for my next trip. Let me know!
PA always scans well. The barcode encoding is solid
Finally went to a venue with a box scanner. Was nervous but it passed no problem.
This was with the new PA template. Just wanted to share for anyone worried about scanners
