Calibrating UV light for consistent ID testing

UV testing results can be inconsistent if you are not controlling the variables properly. The same card can appear to pass or fail UV checks depending on lamp power, distance, angle, ambient lighting, and the wavelength of the UV source. Here is how to standardize the test.

Lamp variables

UV lamp output decreases over time as the bulb ages. A 365nm flashlight that produced strong UV output when new will be noticeably weaker after 100+ hours of use. For consistent comparative testing, use the same lamp at the same point in its lifespan for all tests. If you are comparing a new card to a reference card you tested six months ago, the lamp is different and the comparison is not controlled.

Output power varies between lamps even of the same nominal wattage. High-quality 365nm lamps with 3W output are noticeably brighter than budget 1W models. For detailed examination of fine UV features, higher power makes a real difference in visibility.

Distance and angle standardization

Hold the UV lamp at a consistent distance from the card — I use 15cm as my standard. UV intensity falls off with the square of distance, so even a 5cm variation significantly changes how bright features appear. For testing small features, closer is better. For testing broad field coverage, a consistent distance allows comparison.

The angle between the lamp and the card surface affects which features are most visible. Some UV features fluoresce more strongly when illuminated at 45 degrees than at 90 degrees. Find the angle where the features of interest are most visible and use that angle consistently.

Ambient light

UV testing in a bright room produces different results than testing in a dark room. Ambient visible light competes with the UV-excited fluorescence. For the clearest test, especially of fine features, reduce ambient lighting as much as practical. A closet or a room with light controlled by blackout curtains produces much more consistent results than a lit room.
