Card edge finish — what it tells you about quality
I've handled a lot of cards over the years, and honestly the edge finish is one of the first things I check. If it's rough or peeling, that's a bigger red flag than most people realize—it usually means the whole build was rushed. A clean edge often lines up with other quality markers, like tactile laser engraving that you can actually feel, not just see. Also, if the card is supposed to have a hologram and it's lazy or just printed on, that's a deal-breaker for me.

The edges of a card are one of the easiest places to evaluate construction quality without any special equipment. Most people never look there, which is partly why vendors cut corners on edge finishing — it goes unnoticed.
What good edge finish looks like
On a well-produced polycarbonate card, all four edges are perfectly smooth and show a uniform cross-section where the layers are completely fused together with no visible boundaries between them. The color is consistent along the entire edge — no lighter or darker zones that would indicate uneven material distribution. Corners are cleanly rounded to a consistent radius, not filed asymmetrically or left sharp.
Common edge defects
Layer separation is the most common issue on vendor cards — you can see a hairline boundary between the top layer and the substrate at the edge. This separation indicates incomplete fusion during pressing and is the beginning of eventual delamination under use.
Rough cut edges occur when the card is die-cut without sharp enough tooling. You can feel slight roughness running a fingernail along the edge. This is purely cosmetic but indicates a lower-tier production setup.
Uneven corner radius is visible when you hold the card and inspect the four corners against a straight background. Genuine cards and quality vendor cards have consistent corner radii. Cards cut individually rather than in precision batches often show corner variation.
Why edge quality matters beyond aesthetics
Edge separation progresses over time with use. A card with visible layer boundaries at the edges on delivery will show full separation at the corners within a few months of daily wallet carry. Edges without any layer visibility on delivery are more resistant to this progression.
When comparing two vendor cards and everything else looks similar, the edges are often where the quality difference is visible. Looking at the edges takes five seconds but gives you information about construction quality that surface inspection alone misses.
