Changing delivery address after order placed

Life circumstances sometimes mean you need to change where a package is going after you have placed an order. This is possible in some situations but has a narrow window and depends on where in the production process the order is.

The timing window

The practical window for a delivery address change is from payment confirmation to the moment the package is shipped. Once a shipping label is generated and the package physically leaves the vendor, address changes require carrier intervention and are much harder to execute successfully.

Within the pre-shipment window, most vendors can update the delivery address. The process is usually a support message with your order number and the new address. Some vendors handle this quickly; others require a longer turnaround. If you need the change urgently — you are moving at the end of the week — communicate both the urgency and the deadline clearly in your message.

After shipping

If the package has already shipped internationally, your options depend on the carrier. USPS has a Package Intercept service that can redirect packages in transit for a fee, but it has limitations — it works only on eligible mail classes, and international packages sometimes become ineligible once they clear customs.

UPS and FedEx have address correction options, but they typically charge significant fees and cannot always redirect international shipments that have already cleared the origin country.

Using a forwarding service as a buffer

If you anticipate that your delivery address might need to change — you are moving, you are temporarily at a different location — using a mail forwarding service as your delivery address provides flexibility. The package arrives at the forwarding service's stable address, and you redirect it to wherever you currently are when it arrives. This decouples the package's physical transit from your specific current location.
