Choosing a safe delivery address

The delivery address is one of the few pieces of personal information that connects an order to your physical location. Here is how I think about this decision.

For most people in normal circumstances, a home address is fine. Packages from international vendors look like ordinary e-commerce or personal mail at the carrier level, and nothing about the package identifies its contents to a casual handler. The vast majority of orders deliver to home addresses without any issue.

When alternatives make sense

If you live in an apartment building with a shared mailbox or a doorman who handles packages, your delivery address is effectively semi-public. Multiple people see what arrives for which unit. In these situations, a PO box or mail forwarding service provides more delivery privacy.

If you are ordering a high-value item or for some reason expect extra scrutiny, putting distance between your home address and the customs record is a reasonable precaution. A PO box achieves this at about $80 to $180 per year depending on location and box size.

Options ranked by privacy

Highest privacy: a virtual mailbox service (commercial address, digital notification, physical forwarding on request). These cost $15 to $30 per month and provide a legitimate commercial suite address with no personal connection. Middle tier: USPS PO box — a government-administered box tied to your identity in USPS records but presenting a non-home address to senders. Lowest tier: home address — most convenient, fully traceable.

I use my home address for most orders. I switched to a PO box after an order required me to sign for it at my door while neighbors were present — that single interaction made me reconsider. The PO box is now my standard for anything coming from outside the US.

The PO box approach also creates a clean break between your residential address and your ordering history. If you maintain the same PO box over multiple orders and multiple vendors, the address is associated with a box number that you control rather than a residential address tied to your identity through utility and rental records. The additional layer is modest but consistent across every order without requiring any per-order operational decision.
