Comparing two vendors side by side

posted by kat1111 4 months ago 464 views 5 comments

So I decided to run a little experiment and ordered the same state (let's say Illinois, since that's a common one with distinct holograms) from two different vendors. Used the exact same photo, same physical description, same everything – just to see how the final products would stack up side by side. Figured it might be useful for the community to have a real head-to-head comparison. Here's the breakdown.

Ordering Timeline
Vendor A: Ordered on a Monday afternoon. They confirmed payment the same day and sent a "shipped" notification on Wednesday. It landed in my mailbox the following Tuesday – so exactly 8 days from order to in-hand. Vendor B: Ordered on the same Monday, but they took until Friday to mark it shipped. The pack showed up the next Monday – so 7 days total. Both were domestic, but Vendor B's processing time was a bit slower. No real delays on either end though, which was a relief.

Packaging Stealth
Vendor A used the standard bubble mailer inside a plain manila envelope, with the card tucked between two pieces of cardboard. No smell, no rattle. Vendor B went with a different approach – a thin cardboard sleeve inside a plastic polybag, and the card was wrapped in a sheet of parchment paper. Both were reasonably discreet to the touch, though Vendor B's packaging felt slightly flimsier. If you shook it hard, you could hear a faint crinkle from the parchment paper. Vendor A was completely silent. Neither had any return address from a suspicious location, just generic names. I'd give Vendor A a slight edge on stealth feel, though both would pass casual inspection.

Communication Response Speed
Vendor A responded to my initial inquiry within about 6 hours. Follow-up questions about the hologram placement got answered within 24 hours – polite, to the point. Vendor B took almost 2 days to reply to my first message, and the response was a bit curt. Didn't address all my questions. After ordering, Vendor A sent a confirmation email automatically, while Vendor B only messaged me after I asked about the delay. So if you're someone who likes regular updates, Vendor A is the clear winner here.

VFM (Value for Money) Rating
Vendor A was on the higher end of the price range for this state. Vendor B was about 15-20% cheaper. Given the quality differences I'm about to describe, I'd say Vendor A justifies the extra cost if physical accuracy matters to you. Vendor B is fine if you just need a quick display piece that won't be scrutinized up close. But for the same price delta, I expected less compromise from Vendor B. Overall, VFM: Vendor A – 7/10 (pricey but accurate), Vendor B – 6/10 (cheaper but noticeable flaws).

Hologram Accuracy
This is where the differences really showed. Both were supposed to match the same reference photo. Vendor A's holograms were crisp, with the correct color shift – the star pattern matched the angle of the light source in my reference. The microtext lines were clean enough to read under a loupe. Vendor B's holograms had a distinct blue-green tint that was off by a shade. The star burst pattern didn't align properly; it looked slightly rotated compared to the gen. Under UV, Vendor A's had the right fluorescence pattern on the state seal area, while Vendor B's UV reaction was too weak and splotchy. For a bar test or casual check, you might not catch it, but anyone who actually handles a real ID from that state would spot the hologram difference immediately.

Material Weight and Feel
Both cards were printed on PVC, but the thickness varied. Vendor A came in at roughly 30 mils – standard teslin blend that bends like a real DL without feeling flimsy. The surface texture had that slight matte finish you get from proper lamination. Vendor B felt noticeably lighter – probably closer to 27 mils. It had a plasticky sheen and bent too easily. When I compared them side by side, Vendor B's card had a slight warp along the edges, like it wasn't fully cured. The weight difference is subtle but once you hold both, you understand why material quality matters. Vendor A's card just feels substantial in hand.

Pros and Cons Summary
Vendor A Pros: Accurate holograms, correct weight and feel, fast communication, solid packaging. Cons: Higher price point, processing time was average. Vendor B Pros: Lower price, decent turnaround from ship to door. Cons: Hologram color shift, thinner material, slow communication, UV reaction is weak.

If I had to choose between the two based solely on the finished product, I'd go with Vendor A despite the higher cost. The holos and material feel are the biggest tells for anyone who knows what to look for. Vendor B's offering is fine for a backup, but it's not something I'd hand over in a situation where the ID might actually be examined. Happy to answer any specific questions about the states or comparisons – just drop a reply.

Good question. Honestly, from my experience, one might scan a bit better on IDVisor depending on the template. The UV response and barcode scan rates are usually the biggest tells. I'd say check the fine print alignment too—that's where I've seen pretty noticeable differences between the two.

Totally agree. Honestly, I've done a few side-by-side comparisons myself, and it's crazy how much stuff you miss when you're just looking at individual photos. The small differences in feel and weight? They really stand out. Takes a bit more effort, but totally worth it for knowing what you're actually getting.

Yeah, totally agree. I've handled a few and the weight difference is night and day. Heavier ones just feel way more solid in hand, less flimsy honestly. Nice catch on that. It's one of those subtle tells — a lot of people don't even notice it when they're just looking at scans.

Totally agree, honestly this is exactly the kind of stuff we need more of around here. I've been curious about how these two compare, especially on like turnaround time and overall quality. I'd love to see the specifics — stealth, scans, that kind of thing. Really appreciate you putting this together!

Yeah, which state are you aiming for? I've noticed some templates are way trickier to get right, honestly, so that can swing the comparison a lot. It'd help to know what you're targeting.
