Correcting order details before production starts

Made a typo in my address on one order and a wrong expiration year format on another. Both were caught before production and corrected. Here is the process and the window you have to work with.

The modification window

Most vendors accept order modifications within a short window after placement — typically one to six hours, sometimes up to 24 hours if the order is queued rather than immediately in production. After a card enters active production (meaning the file has been sent to the printer), corrections require canceling the print job and restarting, which some vendors do and others refuse at that stage.

The safest approach is to review your submitted order details immediately after placing it, not hours later. Most vendor sites send an order confirmation that lists all submitted fields. Read it carefully as soon as it arrives.

How to submit a correction

Message vendor support immediately with: your order number, which field is wrong, what it currently says, and what it should say. One message, specific, with all necessary information included. Do not send a vague message asking them to "check my order" — give them the exact correction needed so they can act on it in one step.

If the error is on the proof

If your submitted data was correct but the proof shows the wrong information, that is a vendor data entry error. Reject the proof and include the specific correction in your rejection message. Vendors are generally fast to correct proof errors because it is clearly their mistake and they want to avoid printing a wrong card.

After production has started

Once a card is in production or has shipped, correction options narrow significantly. Some vendors will reprint at a discount for verified vendor-side errors. Address errors that your vendor catches early are sometimes correctable in the shipping label even after the card is printed. For errors you introduced, most vendors offer a discounted reorder rather than a free correction. The lesson is obvious: double-check before submitting, and check the confirmation again immediately after.
