Do vendors keep records of past orders?
Some vendors have an account system where your info is saved. Convenient.
Good question. Worth clarifying with your vendor directly.
Yeah, this is one of those questions that comes up a lot when you're new. I've been around the block a few times, so here's my take based on what I've seen across a handful of vendors I've used over the past year or so.
Most of them do keep some kind of record of past orders — usually for a set period like 6 months to a year, sometimes longer if they're running a loyalty program or tracking issues. The reasoning's pretty straightforward: it helps them handle reorders (so you don't have to re-upload your info every time), manage any quality complaints, and keep their own internal logs straight. But exactly how long they hold onto that data varies, and not all of them are upfront about it. That's why checking their FAQ is the first step — a lot of them have a privacy policy buried in there that says something like "we store order details for X months." If it's not clear, I've found just sending them a quick message gets you a straight answer. Vendors that are on top of their game usually reply within a day, sometimes faster if they're in a similar timezone.
To give you a concrete idea of how this plays out in practice: the last order I placed was a small test run with a well-reviewed vendor I'd used twice before. Timeline went like this — I placed the order on a Monday, got an automated confirmation within an hour. Payment confirmation came through about 6 hours later (they use a few different payment options). Tuesday I got a message saying it was being processed, and it shipped out Wednesday. Tracking updated Thursday, and the pack landed on Saturday — so 6 days door-to-door, which is pretty standard for domestic. The packaging was stealthy enough: plain bubble mailer, no return address that links back to anything obvious, contents wrapped in a couple of layers of paper with a bit of tape. Nothing that would raise eyebrows if someone else opened it, but not over-engineered either. Communication was good — I sent a follow-up asking about a detail on the template, got a reply in about 8 hours with a clear answer and even a quick photo of a sample. Responsiveness like that gives me some confidence that if I ever needed to ask about my old order data, they'd actually help.
Value for money? I'd give it a solid 7/10. The IDs themselves are decent for the price point — good enough for casual use, not perfect under magnification, but the cost is reasonable when you factor in the risk and the time they save you. For record-keeping specifically, the pros are: you can reorder faster without resubmitting all your details, and if there's a defect they can look up your batch and offer a reprint. The cons are obvious — privacy. If their site gets compromised or they ever get pressured, your info (including your address and whatever personal details you sent) could be exposed. That's the trade-off. Some vendors let you request deletion after the order is delivered, but most don't advertise that option. I always use a separate email and a drop or remailer service for anything sensitive, just to put another layer between me and the vendor's records.
So bottom line: yeah, most keep records, but only for a limited time. Do your homework, ask them if you're worried, and assume whatever you send will sit on their server for at least a few months. If that bothers you, look for vendors that explicitly state they purge data after delivery — those exist, but they're not the norm.
I always resubmit everything fresh. Privacy preference personally.
Wondering if I can reorder without sending my photo again or if I need to submit everything fresh each time. Anyone know how most vendors handle repeat customer data?
