Do vendors keep records of past orders?

posted by hopperman 4 months ago 598 views 7 comments

Yo, this is actually a really solid question that I've been wondering about myself lately. I've placed a handful of orders over the past year or so, and every time I go to reorder, I end up going through the whole photo submission process again. It got me thinking—do most vendors actually keep a database of our past orders, or are we starting from scratch each time? I'd love to hear what other people's experiences have been, because for me it's been inconsistent.

Here's my ordering timeline from my last repeat order with a vendor I'd used twice before. I placed the order on a Tuesday evening, paid via BTC within an hour, and got an automated confirmation about 30 minutes later. The next day I sent a message asking if I could just reuse my old photo since my appearance hadn't changed. They replied about 6 hours later—not super fast, but reasonable for the time zone difference—saying they "preferred fresh submission for verification" but that they could check their records if I gave my old order number. I dug up the order ID from my encrypted email and sent it over. Another 12 hours passed before they confirmed they found my old photo and would use it. Production then took 4 days, shipping was marked as domestic priority, and it landed in my mailbox 6 days after that. So total door-to-door was about 12 days.

Packaging stealth on that order was decent—standard bubble mailer with no return address or any obvious indicators. Inside was a folded piece of cardboard with the ID tucked between two layers of thermal paper. No smell, no noise when shaken. Communication wise, like I said, response times averaged around 8-12 hours during the week. I wouldn't call it lightning fast, but they answered my specific question about records without being evasive. As for VFM, I'd rate it a solid 3.5 out of 5. The ID itself looked good, but the reordering process added a bit of friction that made me think twice about coming back.

Pros of vendors who keep records: obviously convenience. If they have your photo on file, you can skip the most annoying step—taking a decent photo against a plain wall with proper lighting. Also your biometric data (height, eye color, etc.) should stay consistent. It speeds up checkout significantly. Cons: security is a big one. If a vendor gets compromised, having a cache of customer photos and personal info is a goldmine for LE. Some vendors claim they delete everything after delivery, but you never really know. Another con is that if your appearance changes (new haircut, gained/lost weight, etc.), you'd probably want to update the photo anyway, so a fresh submission might actually be better for quality consistency.

I've heard from a couple of older members that some vendors use encrypted customer databases with order-only access, meaning they can look up a past order ID but can't browse all records. That sounds like a reasonable middle ground. Others apparently just store nothing—once the order ships, they purge everything. Has anyone here run into a vendor that actually remembers you and proactively offers to reuse your old template? Or do most require you to submit everything fresh? I'm leaning toward the latter being more common, but I'd love to know if there's a safer way to reorder without having to re-pluck a perfect photo every time.

Anyway, curious what the collective wisdom here says. Drop your experiences below—especially if you've dealt with vendors who maintain records versus those who don't, and whether you felt the trade-off in convenience vs. security was worth it.

Yeah it's pretty much unavoidable that they keep something for a bit. I've found that the best indicator is how good their vendor communication is — if they're upfront and quick with replies, they're usually legit about deleting data too. When I finally pulled the trigger on an order, the turnaround time was fast but I still assumed my info sat on a server somewhere for a while. Just don't expect total anonymity unless you're using crypto and Tails.

Yeah I'd assume they keep some records regardless of what they say. Most decent vendors delete personal stuff after the order ships but you never really know. I always pay with crypto and use a burner email just in case. Honestly vendor communication is key here—if they won't give you a straight answer about their data retention in chat that says a lot. Better to ask upfront than wonder later.

Honestly, it's one of those things you just have to assume they do. I always think the safest play is treating every order like your info's stored somewhere — even with a legit vendor. Their customer service responsiveness usually gives you a clue if they're on top of security or not. That said, the best vendor communication I've had usually came from asking directly before placing an order. No point overthinking it after you've pulled the trigger on the order process.

Yeah, same here. I always resubmit everything fresh too. For me it's not just privacy—honestly, I don't trust any vendor to keep my info secure long term. Plus, I'll often use different names or addresses each round just to keep things clean. It just feels safer than hoping they actually delete stuff.

Yeah, most keep your info for a set period even if they say otherwise. Honestly, I'd just check their FAQ or shoot 'em a quick message to be sure. Better safe than sorry, you know? Especially with these types of orders.

Yeah, a few do have account systems. It's convenient if you're a repeat customer, honestly. Personally, I avoid saving anything if I can—just feels safer that way. But I get why some people like it, less hassle on reorders and all. Just make sure you trust the vendor before handing over any info, you know?

I've wondered the same thing honestly. Honestly, best to just ask your vendor directly — most of them are pretty upfront about it if you approach it casually. I wouldn't assume they keep detailed logs long-term tbh, but it's better to clarify with them than to just guess.
