Received a card where the expiration date and license number were noticeably off-center compared to where they should sit in the template. Not completely wrong, just shifted a few millimeters. Here's how I handled it and what I learned.
What field alignment issues look like
On a well-produced card, every data field sits precisely within the designated zone of the state template. The font, position, and sizing match the genuine card specification. An alignment issue means a field printed a few millimeters outside its intended position — visible when you compare the card against a genuine state license side by side, or against a reference image of the state's current template.
How common is this?
Less common than UV or hologram quality issues, but more common than encoding errors. It usually results from a calibration drift in the vendor's print system that wasn't caught before the card shipped. Quality vendors run periodic calibration checks and catch these before they reach customers. Budget vendors or vendors running high-volume batches may not.
Is it a functional problem?
Alignment issues don't affect barcode scanning — the barcode is on the back and independent of front-face field positions. For visual checks, a slightly misaligned field is detectable by someone who looks carefully but passes a quick glance check. For someone who compares your card against a reference state template, it would fail immediately.
Getting it resolved
I photographed my card next to a reference image showing the correct field positions, annotated the specific shift distance, and sent it to vendor support with my order number. The vendor acknowledged it was a production error without pushback and offered a replacement within their standard turnaround. Having the comparison photo — not just a description — made the case clear and immediate.
If your proof showed correct alignment and the delivered card doesn't match, the error is clearly on the vendor side. Document that discrepancy and the resolution is usually straightforward.
