Had a card that scanned cleanly on scanner apps but threw an error at one venue. Spent two weeks figuring out the right way to get useful help from the vendor rather than generic reassurances. Here is what actually worked.
What not to do
Sending "my barcode doesn't work" gets you a generic response. The vendor cannot diagnose or fix anything from that description. I sent two messages like this and got two useless replies asking me to try different scanner apps, which I had already done.
What worked
I photographed the barcode with my phone, decoded it using a free AAMVA parser, and sent the vendor a screenshot of the decoded field output alongside a photo of the card face. I then listed exactly which fields disagreed between the decoded data and the printed card. That message got a real response within 18 hours.
The vendor confirmed one field was encoded incorrectly — a zip code had one wrong digit — and offered a replacement card with the corrected encoding. Production took four days and the replacement scanned correctly on all apps and at the venue where the original had failed.
Documenting the failure
When you encounter a barcode scan failure, try to document what the scanner shows when it fails — does it show "invalid barcode," an error code, or does it decode but show wrong information? Each failure mode points to a different root cause. An app that cannot decode the barcode at all suggests a print quality problem. An app that decodes but shows incorrect data suggests an encoding error. The distinction matters for which fix applies.
If you can, test the card on multiple scanner apps before contacting the vendor. If the card fails on all apps, the problem is the barcode print quality. If it fails on one app but works on others, the issue is app-specific and may not represent a real problem with the card. Vendors are much more responsive when you have already done this triage.
