Noticed a corner of the holographic overlay on a card I have been using for about four months beginning to lift. It was not obvious at first — I felt it before I saw it. Here is what I found out and what options exist.
Why overlays peel
Holographic overlays are bonded to the card surface with an adhesive that is sensitive to heat, edge impact, and the oils on human skin. The most vulnerable point is always the edge or corner — edges have the smallest adhesive contact area and experience the most stress from wallet insertion and removal. A corner that gets repeatedly flexed or pushed against wallet edges starts to separate from the underlying card surface over time.
Stopping early separation
If the peel is caught very early — just a tiny corner lift with no visible crease in the overlay — it can sometimes be pressed back down and held with gentle pressure for 24 hours. Some people use a small amount of UV-cure adhesive applied with a pin to the separated area, then press flat and cure with a UV light. This works if the overlay has not yet been creased or contaminated with skin oil in the separated area.
Once the overlay has been lifted far enough to develop a crease, there is no good repair. The crease remains visible permanently and the adhesive area that separated typically does not rebond cleanly.
Prevention
The overlay condition is directly related to how the card is stored and handled. Cards stored loose in a wallet pocket that flexes during sitting accumulate corner lift faster than cards in a rigid card slot. Using a vertical card holder that does not bend the card protects the overlay edges. Minimizing how often you remove and reinsert the card also reduces cumulative edge stress.
If this happens within the first few weeks of receiving a card, it is a production defect in the adhesive application — document it and contact the vendor for a warranty replacement.
