How important are perforations really?
Most bouncers don't check but the good ones will. It's worth getting an ID with proper perfs if your state has them
Perforations are one of those things people tend to overlook, but honestly, if your state has them, they're a huge deal. I've seen way too many fakes where the perfs are either missing completely or just look like someone went at the card with a hole puncher. That's an instant fail.
So what should good perfs actually look like? Real DMV-issued ones are done with a laser or die-cutting process that gives you clean, sharp edges. The holes should be perfectly round and consistent in diameter - usually around 0.3mm to 0.5mm depending on the state. If you run your fingernail over the back of the card, you shouldn't feel any raised plastic burrs. That's a dead giveaway of cheap drilling. And the pattern has to match the state exactly - some states have a repeating state outline, others use stars or simple dots in specific rows. The spacing between holes should be uniform within 0.1mm tolerance. If there's any deviation, a scanner or even a trained eye will catch it.
Now, how does this tie into the other security features? Perforations are often part of a multi-layer check. When you hold the card up to the light, the perfs should line up perfectly with the ghost image and the hologram overlay. I've seen fakes where the ghost image is slightly off from the perfs - that means the lamination layers weren't aligned during production. That's a fail. Also, under UV light, some states embed microtext or faint patterns around the perforation area. If the UV detail is blurry or missing, even if the perfs look fine, the card will get declined at any place that actually scans the UV.
Scanner tests are where perfs really matter. Modern ID scanners measure the exact distance between the center of each hole and compare it to the state's database. If the pitch is off by more than a couple of microns, the scanner flags it as a reproduction. I've personally had cards that looked perfect to the naked eye but failed on a scanner because the perfs were just slightly too wide or too close together. That's why getting the pattern quality right is non-negotiable if your state requires perfs.
Another thing - perforations aren't just visual, they affect how the card feels. Real perfs create a slightly flexible area but the card still feels rigid overall. Fakes with bad perfs often have a weak spot where the plastic is too thin, or they feel brittle around the edges. If you bend the card slightly near the perfs and see the plastic crack, that's a sign of poor material or cheap cutting.
At the end of the day, if your state requires perfs and you don't have them, the bouncer or cashier will notice immediately. Even if you've got a flawless hologram, a perfect ghost image, and spot-on UV, the missing perfs are a dead giveaway. And if you have them but they're low quality - too large, uneven, wrong pattern - that's just as bad. So yeah, perfs are extremely important. Don't ignore them.
I keep seeing people talk about perforations but honestly I don't even know what they are lol
Are they actually that important? Will bouncers check for them?
