Laser engraving on identity documents is one of the hardest features to replicate accurately, which is why it is used as a primary security feature on high-grade cards. Understanding how it works explains both why it is secure and what to look for when evaluating whether a card uses genuine laser engraving or a simulation.
The physical process
A focused laser beam is directed at the polycarbonate card surface at controlled intensity. The laser does not deposit anything onto the card — instead, it ablates (removes or alters) material at the point of contact. Carbon particles in the polycarbonate substrate are activated by the laser energy, creating a darkened mark that is structurally part of the card material itself rather than a coating on top of it.
This is why laser-engraved text cannot be altered without visibly damaging the card. Attempting to chemically dissolve or scrape the engraving destroys the substrate beneath it. Any alteration leaves a physical trace.
What it looks like
Laser-engraved text is sharply defined with clean edges and consistent depth. Under magnification, individual characters show the same depth throughout — there is no variation in the darkness of the mark across a single character as you would see with printed ink that pools at different rates. The text also appears the same color regardless of viewing angle, unlike printed text which can shift slightly under oblique lighting.
Simulated laser engraving
Some vendors print text using high-contrast black ink that mimics the appearance of laser engraving under casual inspection. The difference is detectable under magnification: printed text shows ink texture and possible dot patterns from the print head, while genuine laser engraving shows a smooth, matte darkening with no visible ink structure.
Running a fingertip across laser-engraved text produces a very slightly recessed tactile sensation. Printed text lies on or above the card surface. This tactile check is subtle but consistent on genuine laser-engraved cards.
