The order status page on most vendor sites shows one of three or four states that are not particularly informative. Here is how to get more useful information than "processing."
What vendor status labels mean
Most vendors use labels like "pending payment," "processing," "in production," and "shipped." The jump from processing to in production is the meaningful one — it means your order has moved from the queue to active production. After shipped, you have a tracking number and the vendor's job is done.
The problem is that many vendors do not update these labels in real time. A status of "processing" might mean your order is actively being printed or it might mean payment was confirmed last week and nothing else has happened yet. The label alone does not tell you which.
Better ways to gauge progress
If the vendor provides a production queue indicator or estimated production date, that is more informative than status labels. Some vendor sites show your position in the queue numerically. If yours does, a position moving from 47 to 12 over a few days is more meaningful than a status label staying on "processing."
The most direct method is a one-sentence message to vendor support: "Order #XXXX placed [date] — can you give me the current production status?" Most vendors will give you a genuine update, and asking specifically about production status rather than shipping status often gets you a more detailed answer.
Tracking numbers
Once you have a tracking number, track it on the carrier's site directly rather than through the vendor's embedded tracker. Carrier site tracking updates faster and shows more detailed events. USPS tracking is on usps.com; China Post packages often also show up on parcelsapp.com or 17track.net with more detail than either origin or destination carrier sites show individually.
