How to pick the right state template

The state you order matters more than most new members realize. Not all states are equally well-executed by all vendors, and the choice affects both card quality and practical usability depending on where you plan to use it.

Popular states have better vendor templates

California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Illinois are the states that vendors produce most frequently. High production volume means vendors have refined their templates over hundreds of orders, updated them when the state issued redesigns, and developed quality control for state-specific features. A less commonly ordered state may have a template that was set up once and rarely revisited.

Ask vendors directly how long they have been producing the state you are considering and how often they update the template. Evasive answers to this question suggest the template is not frequently reviewed.

Match the state to your use context

If you plan to use the card in a state where that state's ID is uncommon — say, a California ID being used in Vermont — the checker is less likely to have handled many genuine California IDs and less likely to spot discrepancies. If you plan to use it in California, the checker may handle California IDs constantly and be far more familiar with the specific details.

Conversely, if you live in Texas and plan local use, an out-of-state card raises a different kind of question — why does this person not have a local ID? Matching the card to a state that is plausibly your home state avoids that implicit question.

Vertical format states

Some states (Arizona, Oregon, Illinois, and others) use a vertical card format for under-21 licenses. If you are visibly underage, ordering a vertical-format state creates an obvious mismatch between your apparent age and the horizontal adult format. Stick to horizontal-format states regardless of other considerations.
