How to take a good ID photo at home - Complete guide

posted by gmontyslide 9 months ago 1,129 views 6 comments
I've seen a lot of people asking about photos so I wanted to share my process. I've ordered 3 IDs using this method and all photos came out perfect. **Equipment needed:** - Smartphone with decent camera - Plain wall (blue, grey, or white) - Good lighting (natural light or bright lamp) - Tripod or something to prop your phone **Step-by-step process:** 1. **Background:** Stand against a plain wall. Blue or grey is best. If you only have white, that works too - vendors can edit it. 2. **Lighting:** Face a window during daytime OR use a bright lamp in front of you. No shadows on your face. No harsh overhead lighting. 3. **Camera position:** Phone should be at eye level, about 3-4 feet away. Use portrait mode if your phone has it. 4. **Your position:** - Stand straight - Shoulders square to camera - Neutral expression (no smile) - Eyes looking directly at camera - No glasses (or ask vendor if they can remove them) 5. **Clothing:** Wear something that contrasts with the background. Dark shirt if light background, light shirt if dark background. 6. **Take multiple shots:** Take 20+ photos and pick the best one. Look for: - No shadows - Eyes fully open - Sharp focus - Even lighting - No glare **Pro tips:** - Look at real DMV photos for reference - Don't wear hats or headphones - Make sure your ears are visible - Hair out of your face - No filters or editing **Common mistakes to avoid:** ❌ Smiling (DMV photos are always neutral) ❌ Bathroom selfies with bad lighting ❌ Shadows on half your face ❌ Background with stuff in it ❌ Tilted head ❌ Photo too close or too far Hope this helps! Good photos make a huge difference in how real the ID looks.

Solid writeup, this is basically the step-by-step tutorial I wish I'd had when I started. One thing I'd add: watch your lighting setup for shadows. A single lamp on one side throws weird shadows on your face, so try facing a window or using two light sources. Also portraits only, like they said above. Wish this had been the sticky when I was getting started, would've saved me a redo.

Saving this post. Best photo guide I've seen on here. Thanks for taking the time to write it out!

Portrait orientation always. You want your head and shoulders in frame, similar to a passport photo. The vendor will crop it to the right dimensions.

One thing to add - if you wear glasses normally, consider ordering WITHOUT glasses in the photo. Makes it way easier to use the ID when you're not wearing them. You can claim you have contacts.

Should the photo be taken in landscape or portrait orientation?
