The fake vendor problem — sites that take payment and disappear — is real enough that it deserves a systematic approach. Here is the verification process I use before placing any order with a new source.
Check for forum history
Any legitimate vendor that has operated for more than a few months will have verifiable presence in forum discussions from multiple independent users. Search the vendor name across multiple forums — not just the vendor's own thread, if they maintain one. Look for posts where users mention the vendor spontaneously, outside of review solicitations. Organic mentions from multiple different accounts across multiple platforms are harder to fabricate than a manicured review thread.
A vendor with zero mentions outside of their own promotional materials, or only very recent posts with no history, is a significant red flag regardless of how professional their website looks.
Test communication before payment
Send a specific question that requires genuine knowledge to answer — something about how they handle a particular state template, what their barcode encoding process is, or what their reship policy says specifically. A scam operation will give you either a generic positive response or no response at all. A legitimate vendor answers specific questions with specific answers.
Response time matters too. A vendor that takes a week to answer a pre-order question is not going to be faster after you pay them.
Payment method as a signal
Legitimate vendors accept crypto (Monero or Bitcoin at minimum) because the irreversibility protects them from chargebacks. Vendors who only accept gift cards or wire transfers are using methods with even weaker recourse for buyers — this is a preference toward higher-risk buyer positioning. Crypto is standard for legitimate vendors; exclusive gift card acceptance is a warning sign.
The combination of active forum history, responsive specific communication, and standard crypto payment methods identifies a vendor worth trying. Any one element missing increases the risk substantially.
