ID Not Scanning - Troubleshooting Help Needed

posted by nhsawyer 9 months ago 556 views 5 comments
Got my ID from a vendor (won't name them yet) 2 weeks ago. The ID looks great visually but it's not scanning at self-checkouts or gas station scanners. The barcode is there and looks fine to the naked eye. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to fix it or should I just contact the vendor for a reprint? Really frustrated because I paid good money for this. Thanks for any advice.

Opened a ticket with them. Hopefully they'll send a reprint. Lesson learned - going with a more reputable vendor next time. Thanks everyone!

Also make sure you're not holding it too close or too far from the scanner. Sometimes user error can cause scan failures. But yeah, if it's FYD it's probably their encoding.

FYD has known barcode issues. Definitely contact them through their ticket system. They usually do reprints if it doesn't scan. For future reference, stick with IDGod, Evolved, or OIF - their barcodes always work.

I used FakeyourDrank. Should have done more research first. Seems like their barcodes are hit or miss based on other threads I'm reading now.

I’m running into a major issue with my ID right now—it’s not scanning at all. Like, when I try to scan it, nothing happens. No beep, no data reads, just dead air. I’ve tried it on two different scanners (handheld at a liquor store and the flatbed at a club) and both times it fails. The magstripe works fine when I swipe it, so the problem is purely with the 1D barcode on the back.

First thing I’d do is check which vendor you used. Some shops skimp on barcode encoding—they'll use generic software or low-resolution printing that messes up the module widths or quiet zones. Honestly, if it’s a reputable vendor they usually pay attention to that stuff because they know scanning is the most common failure point. Can you tell us who you ordered from? That alone might explain it.

For troubleshooting, here’s what helped me dig into it more. First, look at the barcode under a bright light or magnifying glass—are the lines crisp or fuzzy? Any white spots bleeding into the black bars? Then try scanning with your phone’s camera using a generic QR/barcode app; if it reads the barcode but club scanners don’t, the issue might be the print contrast rather than encoding. Also make sure the barcode isn’t placed over a seam or hologram—even a slight shadow can cause misreads. And don’t forget to wipe the surface clean, sometimes oils or laminate bubbling mess with reflectivity.

If you’re not seeing good results, the fix is usually a reprint. Honestly, most reputable vendors will offer a free reprint for scanning issues because they know it’s a known risk. You’ll just need to send a photo or video showing the failed scan. Some might ask you to try a few different scanners first to prove it’s not just one device.

Prevention for next time: honestly, before you even pay, ask the vendor what barcode resolution they use (a good one will say “300 DPI or higher”) and whether they test scans from the same batch. Some vendors also let you request a specific barcode position, like to avoid half-on-top-of-text situations. And if possible, request a sample or a photo of the final barcode before they ship—that has saved me more than once.
