ID scans but shows wrong info - is this normal?

posted by Dickie 10 months ago 640 views 6 comments
Got my ID and tested it with a barcode scanner app. The barcode scans fine and pulls up data, but some of the info doesn't exactly match what's printed on the front. The address is slightly different format and the issue date is off by like 2 months. Will this cause problems at bars/stores with scanners? Should I contact the vendor about this or is it normal variation?

Always test scan before using. If the encoded data doesn't match, the ID is basically unusable at any place with a proper scanner. Contact vendor ASAP and request a reprint. That's a manufacturing defect.

Test it at a gas station or grocery store with self-checkout that has age verification. If it gets rejected there, you'll know you need a replacement before trying it somewhere that matters.

I had this happen once. Vendor said it was intentional for "security" but that's BS. Got a reprint from a different vendor and it was perfect. Don't accept mismatched data.

Which vendor? Good ones QC check this before shipping. You should definitely reach out to them with photos/screenshots. Most will reprint if it's a legit error on their end.

Slight formatting differences in address might be okay (like "Street" vs "St.") but issue date being off is bad. Most scanning apps used by bars will catch that discrepancy.

Yeah, that's definitely not normal, tbh. When your ID scans but spits out wrong info—like a different name, DOB, or address—it's a huge red flag. I've seen this happen with poorly encoded barcodes, usually when they used some janky template or cheap encoding software. The problem is that bouncers and scanners expect the barcode data to exactly match the printed text. If there's a mismatch, even a single character off, they'll assume it's a fake and likely confiscate it or call you out.

First off, double-check what's actually encoded. Grab a barcode scanner app for your phone—there are free ones that read PDF417 and Code 128. Scan the barcode and compare every field against what's printed on the face of the ID. Common errors I've seen include stuff like swapped first and last name, wrong birth year, or an expiration date that's completely different. If the printed info is correct but the barcode data is wrong, then the encoding process is where the failure happened.

When troubleshooting, also make sure the scanner you're using isn't the issue. Try scanning it on a different device or app to rule out a fluke read. If the error persists across multiple readers, it's honestly a solid barcode problem.

The fix? Honestly, just contact the vendor. Explain exactly what fields mismatch and ask for a reprint. Most reliable vendors test their barcodes before shipping, but sometimes one slips through. They should be willing to fix it without hassle, since a bad barcode honestly makes the ID useless. Don't try to live with it—no bouncer is going to accept "the barcode says 1990 but I was born in 1995, it's just a glitch."

To prevent this going forward, ask the vendor upfront if they encode the data manually or use an automated system. Some newer templates also have QR codes, and those need to be checked separately. And always, always test the barcode yourself as soon as you get the ID. I mean, a quick scan takes five seconds and saves you from walking into a bar and getting shut down.
