Illinois laser perforations — not just punch holes

Illinois driver's licenses use laser perforations as a security feature, but the way they work is specific enough that comparing a fake id to the genuine feature without knowing the details produces wrong conclusions. Here is what the Illinois perforation actually is.

Laser perforation vs mechanical punch

The perforations on Illinois IDs are created by a laser that burns through the card substrate — they are not mechanically punched with a die. The difference is visible under magnification: mechanical punched holes have clean circular edges with a slight raised rim from the displaced material. Laser perforations have burned edges with minor carbonization around the hole perimeter and typically less perfectly circular shapes at high magnification.

The holes form a pattern that spells out the state abbreviation "IL" across the card. When held up to light, you can see the light pattern through the perforations. This is the intended verification scan method for this scannable id — hold the card to a light source and the "IL" pattern appears.

Vendor implementation

Most vendors that produce Illinois cards do include the perforations on their novelty id designs, but the quality varies. The hole diameter and spacing are specified in the Illinois design standard. Vendor cards I have examined show correct pattern placement (the "IL" readable when backlit) but variable hole size — some cards have slightly larger holes than genuine cards, and the hole edges are less consistent than what a proper laser perforation system produces on the fake driver's license.

Under normal use, this difference is not detectable. Backlit inspection of the "IL" pattern passes on most vendor cards I have seen. Close-edge examination under magnification reveals the quality difference, but that level of scrutiny is uncommon in real-world checking scenarios.

If you are ordering an Illinois card specifically, confirming with the vendor that they produce the laser perforations is worth asking before ordering.

I’ve always thought the laser perforation on these IDs is what sets them apart—the way it catches the light feels way more legit than the usual punch holes. Not sure if it’s just me, but comparing it under 365nm UV light really shows off the detail; the ghost image stays sharp while cheaper stuff just bleeds out. Plus, the tactile laser engraving on the surface is a nice touch that makes it pass a quick hand exam. Most places don’t even bust out the PDF417 scanner these days, but it’s reassuring when it does pass scan without drama. Keeps you from dealing with lazy holograms that scream “fake” from across the bar.
