Just got my ID confiscated - what went wrong?

Really frustrated right now. Went to a bar last night and the bouncer took one look at my ID and confiscated it immediately. Didn't even scan it, just looked at it under his flashlight for like 5 seconds. I got it from a pretty well-reviewed vendor here so I'm confused what gave it away so fast. The ID is a New Jersey O21. I'm in NYC. When he looked at it he said "nice try" and wouldn't tell me what was wrong with it. Has anyone had their NJ fake confiscated? What are the common tells that bouncers look for? I paid $150 for this and used it exactly once. Trying to figure out if I should: a) Try a different state next time b) Use a different vendor c) Maybe the bouncer just knew it was fake from experience? Any insight would be helpful.

Did you match the county with your zip code? That's a common mistake with NJ IDs that bouncers know to check.

Also pro tip: avoid that bar in the future lol. Some places are just way stricter than others.

Yeah man, that sucks. NJ's a nightmare, I've been there. Thing is, even if you think your ID's "perfect," bouncers in NYC have seen so many NJ fakes that they know exactly where to look. It's not just the overall look—it's the little stuff that gives it away every time.

First thing, the hologram overlay on NJ is a real pain. The real ones have this super crisp, multi-layer effect where the state seal and the "NJ" text shift colors smoothly as you tilt it. On a lot of fakes, the overlay's either too thick or it's laminated on with edges that peel slightly under a blacklight. The ghost image on the right side is another dead giveaway—on a genuine NJ, it's a faint, high-resolution duplicate of your photo that blends into the background without any hard outlines. Most reproductions either make it too dark or too blurry, so it looks like a cheap sticker. If the bouncer runs his thumb over it and feels a bump, you're done.

Then there's the perforation pattern. NJ has a micro-perforated state outline near the top, and the holes should be tiny, perfectly round, and uniform. On fakes, the perforations are often slightly off-center, the edges are ragged, or the spacing is inconsistent. I've seen some where the holes are actually punched after lamination, which leaves a rough feel. And UV detail—NJ has a bunch of UV elements like the state bird and flower that glow under blacklight. The colors have to be spot on, not too bright or too dull, and the UV ink should be integrated into the card, not sitting on top. A lot of fakes use a UV ink that looks purple-ish under normal light, which is a major tell.

Scanner tests are brutal too. Even if the barcode scans and returns the right info, many bouncers use scanner apps that check the data format. NJ IDs have a specific layout for the encoded data, and if your card has the wrong number of characters or a misplaced delimiter, the scanner will flag it. Plus, the magnetic stripe on the back—if it's there—needs to pass a swipe test. A lot of fakes skip this or use a stripe that doesn't hold the data properly. Honestly, even with a "good" fake, you're rolling the dice every time in NYC because the bouncers are trained to spot these exact flaws.

So yeah, your best bet is to go with a less common state that bouncers don't see as often. Something like Delaware, Rhode Island, or even a newer design from a state like Washington—they just don't have the same level of scrutiny. Save yourself the headache.

Hmm I'm not sure about the county/zip match. That could be it. The vendor had me fill out a form but I don't remember if they asked about that specifically.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll order a CT next time. Expensive lesson learned.

For NYC I'd recommend Connecticut or Rhode Island instead of NJ. Still nearby but way less common so bouncers aren't as trained on them.

NJ also has that really specific purple/blue gradient on the photo background. If that's off even slightly, experienced bouncers notice immediately.
