Yeah, the laser perforation check is one of those things that separates the decent props from the truly impressive ones. I've been looking at this closely on my new pickup and wanted to share some observations that go beyond just holding it up to a light.

First off, how the perforations are made matters. Real DMV-issued cards use a high-powered laser to ablate tiny holes through the polycarbonate core, typically between 100-150 microns in diameter. The key is that the holes should be perfectly straight-sided, not tapered. If you look at the edge of the hole under a magnifier, you want clean, sharp boundaries—no melted plastic ridges or rough edges. My current prop gets this right: the holes are perfectly cylindrical from front to back, which is the hallmark of a good laser-engraved perforation. The spacing is also critical—on a genuine card, the center-to-center distance between holes is consistent to within a few microns. I measured mine with a jeweler's loupe and a reticle, and the pitch matched a genuine reference I have. If you see any drift or crowding, that's a sign the laser stage wasn't calibrated properly.

The pattern itself varies by state. Some states (like Pennsylvania or Illinois) use a stacked DOB pattern—month, day, year—while others (like Ohio or Michigan) use a ghost state outline or a specific symbol. I've tested mine against genuine reference and the spacing between holes is dead-on. The row alignment should be perfect, with no wobble or drift across the line. Laser perforation is expensive and slow to get right. That's why cheap vendors skip it or fake it with mechanical punches. If your ID has clean, tapered laser holes in the correct pattern, your vendor invested in the right equipment. If not, you're carrying a card that fails the second someone pulls out a flashlight.

Yeah, the flashlight trick is a must. I’ve had a couple that looked okay in normal light but the **laser perforation** was all over the place under a bright window. Clean, crisp holes make a world of difference if you’re somewhere that actually checks closely. Same goes for **tactile laser engraving** — if the texture feels off, it ruins the whole thing. Honestly, I've been wondering the same thing. From what I've seen, it's mostly the northeast and west coast states that are picky about laser perforation — NY, CA, IL for sure. On my prop I just look for the tiny holes around the birthdate area. If they're clean and go all the way through, that's usually a good sign. YMMV though.

Good call. I always hold mine up to a bright window or flashlight as soon as I get it. It's honestly surprising how many fakes can't get the perforation pattern right — it's a pretty easy way to spot a dud before you even bother scanning it.

I always do the flashlight trick too. When the laser perforation is clean and the holes are crisp, you can really tell the difference from the ones where it's just dots printed on.
