MagicIDs vs OldIronSides choice

posted by idguyidk 3 weeks ago 222 views 0 comments

I've been going back and forth on MagicIDs versus OldIronSides for my next order and finally made a decision after spending a few weeks reviewing everything I could find. Writing this up for anyone in the same position.

What I Was Looking For

My priority is a card that passes a careful visual inspection and scans correctly. I don't need the highest possible polish — I'm not doing side-by-side comparisons under magnification — but I do need it to hold up when someone actually looks at it and runs it through a scanner app. Secondary priority was communication: I've had bad experiences with vendors who go dark for two weeks, and I'd rather pay slightly more for a vendor where support actually responds.

MagicIDs

The card quality reviews I found for MagicIDs from the past four months were consistently good for Eastern states. People mentioned clean overlay application, accurate ghost image placement, and barcodes that passed on multiple scanner apps. The weakness that kept coming up was response time — several posts mentioned that support messages went unanswered for five or more days. One person reported a proof correction that took ten days to get acknowledged. For my use case, that communication pattern is a problem.

OldIronSides

OldIronSides reviews for my target state were strong, and the support reputation was notably better. Multiple posts from the past two months mentioned getting replies within 24 to 36 hours, including on weekends. The card quality descriptions were similar to MagicIDs — solid overlay, good barcode, accurate template — with one repeated note that the card stock feels slightly lighter than genuine. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing.

My Decision

I went with OldIronSides. The card quality difference between the two looks minimal for my target state, and the support responsiveness tipped the decision. If MagicIDs is your target vendor because they have a particularly strong template for your state, the quality justifies the slower support — but if it's a close call, I'd weight communication more heavily than most forum posts suggest.
