Magnetic stripe reads correctly at the door

Venue had a mag stripe reader alongside their barcode scanner. My prop read correctly on both. Worth verifying that your vendor encodes the stripe since not all do. This will catch you out at certain venues.

Good to hear the track data encoded properly. I've had cheap states id before where the stripe read once then nothing, so consistent passes scan performance matters more than people think. Stripe encoding and font weight are usually where budget vendors cut corners, at least in my experience.

That "passes scan" consistency really is what separates the good ones. I've got a small scanner setup at home that I test magnet stripes on before I even leave for the weekend, and it's saved me from a couple of embarrassing swipes. People obsess over ghost image or UV bleeds but the magnetic layer is what actually gets checked more often.

Nice to hear yours came out clean — that’s the kind of QC you hope for but rarely get. I’ve had a couple batches where the stripe wouldn’t pass scan at all, tbh it’s a total letdown when you hand them out. This makes me want to hit my vendor up about QC now. Also check for lazy holograms too, seems like a good batch catches that detail just as much as the stripe when a bouncer really eyes it.

Mag stripe readers are more common at casino-adjacent and upscale venues.

So I just got my latest order in and figured I'd drop a quick report on the magnetic stripe since it's been a hot topic lately. The swipe at the door read perfectly on the first try – the stripe encoded clean with the correct track data, no alignment issues. I've definitely run into vendors before who skip the encoding entirely or use lazy track formatting that fails on certain readers. Tbh, always ask your source whether they actually write track 1, track 2, or both. Some cheap blanks don't even have a magnetic stripe at all under the laminate, so you end up with a fake-looking smooth area that's a dead giveaway. This one felt right – the stripe material had that subtle raised texture and the swipe sound was normal. Honestly, not all vendors encode it, so it's worth confirming before you order.

While I was at it, I also gave the rest of the security features a once-over since those are just as important for passing closer inspection. The hologram overlay construction looked solid – the thin reflective foil was fully laminated into the PVC, not just glued on top. No peeling around the edges, and the rainbow shift was consistent across the whole overlay, with that fine microtext visible under a loupe. Ghost image clarity was decent too – honestly, not perfect but typical for a printed ghost rather than a true laser-engraved one. The image was semi-transparent in the right way, and the offset from the main photo matched the state I was going for. You can sometimes see a weird shadow effect or the colors bleeding into the ghost area on lower quality jobs, but this one avoided that.

I hit the perforations with a backlight and the pattern looked clean – tiny holes drilled in a neat grid, no jagged edges or melted plastic residue. The spacing was spot-on for the state's standard, and the border around the perforation area was crisp. UV detail accuracy was good under a blacklight – the state seal and secondary patterns lit up clearly with the right colors, and there was no overspray or background glow. I took it to a scanner that reads document security features, and besides the magstripe passing (as mentioned), the rest came back fine – no red flags on the UV response or barcode checksum. Yeah, definitely worth doing a full battery of tests before you rely on it for anything critical. Just remember to ask about the encoding upfront – it's a simple question that separates the serious vendors from the ones cutting corners.

This is something a lot of people overlook. Good heads up for the community.
