Maryland ID template accuracy — what I found

Maryland licenses have a distinctive design that several vendors claim to produce accurately. I checked a vendor card against a genuine Maryland license borrowed from a collector. Here is what I found.

Overall layout

The color scheme and general layout matched well. Maryland uses a red and gold color theme with state imagery on the card face, and the vendor card reproduced these elements in the correct positions. The proportions of the main design elements were close to the genuine card.

The crab motif

Maryland is distinctive for incorporating a crab design element. On the genuine card, the crab image is rendered with fine line detail that is clearly defined under magnification. On the vendor card, the same element was present but showed slight ink bleeding in the finer lines of the crab's legs and claws — not obvious at normal viewing distance but visible at 5x magnification. This is a common vendor limitation in reproducing fine-detail illustration elements.

Ghost image

Maryland uses a ghost image on the card face. The genuine card ghost image is sized and positioned at a specific location relative to the main photo. The vendor card had the ghost image present but approximately 10 percent larger than on the genuine card, with slightly different positioning. This is the most noticeable discrepancy between the two cards and would be visible to someone examining a Maryland license closely with a reference.

UV and barcode

UV features were present and visible under 365nm UV. The barcode decoded correctly on multiple scanner apps. These functional elements were well-executed. The main quality gap is in the fine print reproduction of the crab motif detail and the ghost image sizing.

The crab motif detail issue affects all vendors producing Maryland cards regardless of their general quality tier. It stems from the fine linework in the official design requiring print resolution that most card printers do not achieve at full fidelity. Checking any vendor's Maryland sample specifically is more informative than inferring Maryland quality from their California or Texas output, since different template elements stress different aspects of production capability.
