Missouri licenses have gone through several redesigns over the past decade and the current version has more security features than the state's reputation in vendor circles might suggest. Here's a walkthrough of what to check.
Card construction
Missouri issues polycarbonate cards. The current design uses laser engraving for the photo and personal data fields on the higher-security REAL ID compliant version. Laser-engraved text has a different appearance under magnification than inkjet-printed text — the characters are crisp and slightly recessed rather than sitting on the surface as ink deposits.
Holographic overlay
The MO overlay uses a state-themed OVD with the Gateway Arch as a recognizable element. The arch should be clearly visible within the holographic pattern and shift color as the card tilts — moving through a gold-green-blue sequence. Vendor cards generally reproduce the arch shape, but the color sequence varies. Some shift only through two of the three expected colors, which is a quality indicator.
UV features
Missouri has UV-reactive elements in the card background. Under 365nm light, a fine line pattern appears across the card surface along with a UV-reactive state seal element. The seal element is the more consistent of the two — background patterns vary more between vendor batches. Check that the seal appears complete and correctly positioned rather than partial or off-center.
Barcode
Missouri uses the standard AAMVA PDF417 on the card back. One thing that catches some vendor cards: Missouri's license number format is specific — it follows a letter-digit pattern that a state-aware checker would recognize. Make sure the vendor uses the correct format for MO rather than a generic license number. Ask specifically about this before ordering.
Overall a solid state to order if you need a Midwest option. The main quality differentiator between vendors on MO cards is the hologram color sequence and the UV seal reproduction.
