Montana is an unusual state for ID collecting and ordering — low population but distinctive design choices. Examined a vendor card against a genuine Montana license and here are my notes.
The design
Current Montana licenses feature landscape imagery including mountain scenery and the Big Sky Country branding. The background uses a gradient from lighter at the top to a richer blue at the bottom. The state silhouette appears as a translucent watermark element in the background. The overall color scheme is distinctive and more visually complex than many other state designs.
Security features
Montana uses a holographic overlay with a repeating state seal and elk design. Under angle testing, the overlay produces a clear color shift. The UV features include a background grid pattern and a ghost image. Laser engraving is used for the personalization data on current card generations.
Vendor reproduction quality
The vendor card I examined reproduced the overall color scheme and background imagery well. The gradient from top to bottom was correct in direction and approximate color range. The hologram shifted in the right direction, though the elk design element within the hologram was less detailed than on the genuine card — the animal outline was present but with reduced internal detail.
The ghost image was the weakest element — positioned correctly but noticeably too large relative to the main photo. This is a common sizing calibration issue across multiple states in vendor production.
Montana's practical considerations
Montana IDs are rarely seen outside the state. In most major metropolitan venues, a bouncer who has seen thousands of California and Texas IDs may never have handled a Montana license. This can work in either direction — an incorrect element might go unnoticed because there is no reference point, but an unusual ID might get more scrutiny simply because it is unfamiliar.
