My first novelty ID arrived - initial impressions

posted by geraldwallaceid 5 months ago 555 views 5 comments

Received my first order. Better quality than I expected honestly. Hologram looks right under different lighting angles, barcode scanned correctly on the app I downloaded, and the overall feel of the ID card is solid. Tested thoroughly before using it.

Man, congrats on the first one! Taking it slow like that is definitely the way to go. It's like a step-by-step tutorial you made for yourself, and that will save you so many headaches. When getting started, I can't recommend enough doing exactly what you said—especially checking the signature background in good lighting setup to make sure there are no weird shadows that scream "noob." Wishing I'd hit the search bar more before my first move!

Good call on doing a thorough check first. I wish I'd done that with my first one — I just jumped in and instantly got called out on a shitty signature background. Getting started right means perfecting that step-by-step tutorial stuff, especially the lighting setup shadows. If you haven't already, read the sticky on taking ID photo at home. Saved me big time on my second attempt. What design did you go with?

Good first experience sets the right baseline. Happy to help with any follow up questions.

Testing before using is the smart move. Know your ID card before you present it anywhere. I just got my first novelty and thought I'd share some observations and steps that helped me check it over. This is the kind of stuff I wish someone had spelled out for me when I started reading this forum.

Here's the inspection I did:
First, I gave the card a good feel in daylight. Checked the thickness – a real state ID should be stiff but slightly flexible, not flimsy like a gift card. Then I looked at the laminate edges – any peeling or uneven seal is a dead giveaway. Next I held it up to a window and tilted it to see the holograms: most states have a repeating state seal or outline that shifts when you rock the card. I also compared the microprint text (like "STATE NAME" repeated in a fine line around the photo or birthday) with a magnifying glass – if it's blurry or missing, that's a fail. Finally I ran it under a blacklight to see the UV pattern – usually a state outline, flower, or flag that glows. Don't skip the weight test either – a real card has a specific weight per square inch; novices often use too much or too little PVC.

Key terms you'll see around here:
You'll see a few terms around here – like ghost image, which is that faint second photo to the side of your main pic. On most real IDs it's a smaller, slightly transparent version of your face. Then there's OVI – optically variable ink. On California IDs the little bear and star change color from gold to green when you tilt. Cheap novices just print a static gold spot. Lamination layers – real IDs have a clear overlay glued on, not a single solid piece of plastic. You can sometimes see a fine seam along the edge. And barcode encoding – it's not enough that the barcode scans; the data inside must match the printed info exactly. Some novices encode a generic string that decodes wrong.

Safety checklist before you even think about presenting it:
Before you even think about presenting it, go through a safety checklist. Memorize the name, DOB, address, and any expiration date – stumbling means suspicion. Verify the signature looks like your handwriting (or at least doesn't look printed). Check the font alignment – are the letters straight or slightly wavy? Real IDs have perfect kerning. Do the bend test: flex it gently (don't crease) – it should bend and snap back, not crack the laminate. Run the barcode under a scanner app on your phone – most phone scanners decode the text, so see if it matches every character on the front. Try a quick UV test if you have a blacklight – a missing or wrong UV pattern is the #1 reason IDs get caught at bars with fancy lights. Read the card under a bright desk lamp – any visible print dots or ink bleed spells trouble.

Common mistakes I've seen warned about in other threads:
There are common mistakes I've seen warned about in other threads. Don't rush to use it the same day you take it out of the envelope – the laminate needs at least 24–48 hours to fully set (especially if it was packaged flat). Give it a day under a heavy book. Practice your signature – your real signature won't match the one on the card if you stay relaxed; people tense up and sign differently when nervous. Don't forget to check the "bend-and-hold" test against a real ID from the same state. If your state has a specific thickness (like 30 mil vs 27 mil), a novice that's off by even 3 mils can feel wrong in a bouncer's hand. Don't assume that because it passed your buddy's glance, it's good for a club with a barcode scanner and UV light – always test with the worst-case scrutiny you expect. And if you try to peel off a sticker or fix a small bubble, you'll only make it worse. If the laminate is lifting, the ID is probably a dud for anything beyond an ATV run.

Bottom line: don't be that guy who learns his ID is fake by watching the bartender hand it to a manager. Take an hour to run through all the checks I listed. The few minutes you spend now might save you from a bad night or worse. It's not paranoid – it's prepared. Good luck out there.

What state did you go with for the first one?
