New Jersey issues one of the more visually busy state licenses in the current generation — a lot of design elements packed into the card face. I examined a vendor card against a genuine reference to document what is accurate and what is not.
Layout accuracy
NJ uses a standard landscape format with the Garden State bridge image as a prominent background element. The vendor card placed the bridge image correctly in terms of scale and position. The fine-line background pattern that appears across the card face was reproduced at approximately correct density, though under strong magnification the pattern elements were slightly blurrier than on the genuine card.
Hologram
New Jersey licenses use an overlay with the state outline and the words "GARDEN STATE" incorporated into the holographic design. On the genuine card, tilting reveals these elements clearly with a clean shift between a gold-green and a blue color. The vendor card showed the NJ outline element but the state text was less legible under angle — the resolution of the holographic design elements was lower than the genuine card, making fine text less distinct without being absent.
UV features
The UV background on NJ cards shows a specific repeating pattern under 365nm. The vendor card showed UV reactivity in the correct location but the specific pattern elements were less detailed than the genuine card — more of a solid glow than a patterned fluorescence. This is a common quality gap in UV reproduction and does not affect casual inspection.
Barcode and mag stripe
Both decoded correctly. NJ license numbers use a specific format that the vendor had implemented correctly. No field inconsistencies between the barcode data and the card face. This is where the card scored best relative to the genuine comparison.
Overall: a competent card for casual inspection. Detailed examination reveals the hologram resolution gap most clearly. The data elements are well-executed.
