New York updated their ID security - should we be worried?
The good news is that most bouncers aren't trained on the new features yet, so old NY IDs should still work fine for a while. But yeah, eventually vendors will need to catch up.
I'd recommend going with CA, TX, or FL instead if you need something reliable right now. Those states haven't had major updates recently and vendors have them down perfectly.
I heard about this too. From what I understand, they added some new tactile features and updated the hologram overlay. Definitely gonna make it harder for vendors to replicate.
Yeah agree with @Spiffy. Don't rush into NY right now. Give it a month or two for the top vendors to update their templates and you'll be golden.
That makes sense. I guess I'll hold off on ordering a NY ID for now and maybe go with a different state instead.
Anyone know which vendors are already working on the updated NY template? I need to order one soon for a trip.
Yeah, I saw the same thing—NYSDMV officially announced the new license design a few weeks back. The big question is whether the changes are just cosmetic or if they actually beefed up the security in ways that'll bust old templates. I've been digging through some comparison shots and a few early test runs, so here's what I can share without naming any specific vendors or sources.
First off, let's talk about the hologram overlay construction. The old NY licenses had a pretty standard repeating "New York" text and state outline in the OVI patch—decent depth but a static pattern. The new ones seem to have switched to a more complex optical variable ink setup with a multi-layered wave effect that shifts color across a wider angle. From the fakes I've seen attempted so far, the overlay tends to be either too thick or too reflective. Real overlays sit almost flush with the card surface and have a subtle metallic sheen that moves smoothly as you tilt. The clone attempts often have that flat, shiny look that doesn't shift properly, or the pattern is slightly misaligned edge-to-edge. Honestly, if you don't have a proper laminator and the exact OVI foil, this is going to be a tough one to replicate cleanly.
Ghost image clarity is another area where I'd be cautious. The new NY license has a secondary ghost portrait printed with a very fine halftone dot pattern—almost like a faint watermark—offset to the right of the main photo. In the gen you'd get from a decent printer, the ghost often comes out too opaque or too blurry; the dots merge together, losing that airy, translucent look. The real card uses a laser-engraved or dye-sub hybrid that creates sharp edges even in the ghost. I've seen people try to fake it with a partial opacity overlay, but under magnification you can tell it's a separate layer rather than a seamless part of the card.
Perforation pattern quality is a classic NY tell. The new design has a series of micro-perforations on the left edge that form the state shape and the letters "NY". These holes need to be laser-drilled with consistent spacing and clean edges—no rough burrs or melted plastic rings. In older fakes, the perforations were often too large, too irregular, or positioned slightly off from the alignment marks. On the updated card, the hole diameter seems to have shrunk by maybe 0.2mm, and the spacing between them is tighter. If your current template doesn't have that exact density, it'll be obvious under a backlight or when you hold it up to a light source. I've heard of some replicators trying to punch them manually, but it almost always leaves uneven edges.
UV detail accuracy is where most cheap fakes fail, tbh. The new NY license has a bunch of UV elements—state outline, a small liberty torch, and repeating microtext along the bottom border. The genuine card uses a UV fluorescent ink that glows a very specific pale blue-green under blacklight, not the bright neon or muted gray you get from generic inks. Also, the UV elements are printed with precise registration relative to the card's graphics. I've tested a few "pre-update" fakes under UV, and the color is off—more of a harsh blue or sometimes even purple. The new one also seems to have a UV-responsive layer in the hologram itself that adds another ghost pattern, but I haven't confirmed that part yet with a real sample under a 365nm light.
Scanner test results—this is the big one for bouncers and police scanners. The barcode on the back uses a 2D PDF417 format with specific data encoding for NY. While most newer fakes can encode the correct format, the new security features might affect how scanners read the card's magstripe or the OCR area. I've seen reports that some older fakes pass basic scanner checks because the data still matches, but the visual security failures—like the hologram or ghost image—will get flagged by any half-competent door guy who knows what to look for. If you're relying solely on scanner pass, you might still be okay, but the visual inspection is going to be much stricter now.
Honestly, I wouldn't run any old template until I see a confirmed side-by-side of the new real ID with a replicated version that passes all these checks. Vendors are likely working on updated layers, but until someone posts a tear-down with UV, magnifier, and scanner results, I'd hold off. The changes feel meaningful—this is not a minor color swap like some states do. NY went in on the security front, and if you're using something that was decent six months ago, it might get burned hard now.
