I received cards from both OldIronSides and MagicIDs within the same month and compared them systematically because I was deciding which vendor to use for my next order. Here's what the side-by-side actually showed.
Card Stock and Feel
Both cards felt appropriately rigid — neither showed the soft flex that indicates PVC construction. The OldIronSides card had a slightly heavier feel when I balanced both on a finger. I don't have precise scales so this is a tactile impression rather than a measurement, but it was consistent across multiple handling sessions. Both passed the drop test with the ring characteristic of polycarbonate rather than the dull thud of PVC.
Overlay and Holographic Elements
The MagicIDs overlay sat more cleanly at the card edges. The OldIronSides overlay had a barely detectable lift at one corner — less than a millimeter, not visible in normal use but noticeable when I ran my fingernail across the corner. Both produced appropriate color shift under a direct light source when tilted. Neither showed the flat, single-color imitation hologram that lower-tier vendors sometimes produce.
UV Features
Both cards had the expected UV element for their respective states. MagicIDs had more even density across the UV element — no patchy areas, consistent fluorescence. The OldIronSides UV element was present and positioned correctly but showed slightly lower intensity at the edges of the feature, which is a minor quality difference rather than a failure.
Barcode
Both barcodes decoded correctly on all three apps I tested. All AAMVA fields were present and consistent with the card face data on both. No field encoding errors on either.
My Takeaway
MagicIDs edged out OldIronSides on overlay cleanliness and UV uniformity. OldIronSides had the heavier feel that reads as slightly more premium. The difference was small enough that either vendor would produce a result I'd be satisfied with. I went with MagicIDs for the next order primarily because of the overlay quality margin on this comparison.
