Vendor tracking portals are frequently buggy in specific, predictable ways. After a dozen orders across different vendor systems, here are the common failure modes and what they actually mean.
Status stuck at processing for weeks
I have seen this in two distinct forms. First: the vendor's system is not updating status automatically and someone needs to manually change it. The order may be shipped already. Check whether you received a shipping notification email separately from the portal status — sometimes the email and the portal are not synchronized. Second: the order genuinely is not moving. Ask the vendor directly after 15 days of stale status rather than waiting longer.
Tracking number not activating
A tracking number that shows no results when searched is usually one of two things: the number was generated in the vendor's system but not yet transmitted to the carrier, or the carrier received it but has not scanned the package yet. The first scan typically happens when the package leaves the origin facility. If you have a tracking number that shows nothing after 48 hours, it is likely still at the vendor's facility and the shipment has not been handed to the carrier yet.
Portal shows wrong status after delivery
Some vendor portals keep showing "shipped" even after delivery because they do not pull delivery confirmation back from the carrier. The card arrived; the portal just does not know it. If you are waiting for a status change to "delivered" to confirm arrival, you may wait indefinitely. Check the carrier tracking directly rather than relying on vendor portal status for delivery confirmation.
The most reliable system: treat the vendor portal as a rough guide and track through the carrier's own site for accurate status. The carrier site updates faster and has more granular events than most vendor portals.
