Ordered dupes from two different sources - comparison

posted by juiceflow 4 months ago 576 views 10 comments

So I recently decided I needed a backup replica since my main one is starting to show some wear after heavy use. Figured while I was at it, I'd try out a second source at the same time to see how they compare. Both orders were placed on the same day, just to keep timing consistent. Wanted to share the full breakdown here because I know a lot of you are in the same boat looking for reliable backups.

Ordering Timeline

Vendor A: Order placed, payment confirmed within 2 hours. Got a shipping notification on day 3, and the package arrived on day 10 total (7 days in transit). No weekend hold ups. Vendor B: Order went through quickly too, payment confirmed same day. But shipping notification didn't come until day 5. Then it took 9 days in transit, so total was 14 days from order to mailbox. Both were domestic shipping, so the delay on B was noticeable.

Packaging Stealth

Vendor A: Came in a plain bubble mailer with no return address that matched the contents. Inside was a folded piece of cardboard, and the ID was slipped into a plastic sleeve hidden between cardboard layers. No labels, no branding. Very clean. Vendor B: Arrived in a small box with a generic electronics brand sticker on the outside. Inside had some packing paper, and the ID was taped to the inside of the box lid. Slightly less stealthy because if someone opened it, they'd see the ID right away if they flipped the lid. But still not obvious at first glance.

Communication Response Speed

Vendor A: Replied within 4-6 hours during business days. Very straightforward answers, no fluff. Vendor B: More like 12-24 hours, sometimes longer on weekends. One time didn't get a reply for almost 2 days. Both were polite, but A definitely wins on response time.

VFM Rating (Value for Money)

Vendor A: I'd give a solid 8/10. Price was reasonable, got what I paid for, no surprises. Vendor B: 6/10. Slightly cheaper upfront, but the quality issues I'll mention below make it less of a bargain in the long run.

Detailed Comparison

Now for the actual ID quality. Hologram accuracy: Vendor A nailed it. The overlays, the shifting images, the microtext inside the hologram – all crisp and match my reference state. Vendor B's holograms are noticeably off. The state seal outline is thicker, the color shift is dull, and the placement is slightly tilted compared to the real thing. Material weight: Here Vendor B actually did better. Their card has a heavier, more rigid feel that really matches the thickness and flex of the real DL. Vendor A's card is a bit lighter and bends a little too easily – feels cheap in hand. UV detail: Vendor A wins again. Under blacklight, the ghost image is sharp, the state abbreviation glows clearly, and all the hidden elements are there. Vendor B's UV is weak – the ghost image is faint, some elements don't glow at all, and the overall brightness is dim.

Specific Pros and Cons

Vendor A pros: Great holograms, excellent UV, fast shipping, good communication. Cons: Material feels slightly flimsy, might not pass a bend test. Vendor B pros: Card weight and feel are spot on, good texture. Cons: Hologram accuracy is poor, UV detail is weak, slower shipping, less responsive communication.

Final Take

If I had to choose just one, I'd go with Vendor A and maybe laminate the card to improve rigidity. Vendor B has potential if they fix their hologram and UV work. But for a backup, both will work in low-light situations. Just wanted to share the full timeline and packaging details because I know those matter a lot when you're deciding where to order. Hope this helps someone!

Ha, the kitchen table comparison is basically a rite of passage around here. I'd go with the one that feels right in hand too — looks fade once it's in your pocket all day. Though honestly if a vendor came through on turnaround time and didn't ghost you on questions, that counts for a lot in my book. CS responsiveness is half the reason I stick with anyone long term.

Ha, I've done this exact thing — two sources, side by side on the kitchen table like a science experiment. Personally I lean toward the one with the better feel too, since looks fade once it's in your pocket. Though honestly the whole order process mattered more than I expected. One vendor came through with great communication, the other ghosted me for a week. That alone might decide my daily carry, even if the other looked sharper. Which one nails stealth packaging better btw?

Yeah I've done this exact thing before and it's always a toss-up. For me the one that nailed the feel wins for daily carry, looks matter less once it's in your pocket. Curious on the order process too, did both have similar turnaround time? I've had a vendor come through fast but drop the ball on customer service responsiveness, and honestly that matters as much as the product for me these days.

Good thread. I've been in that boat more than once, and honestly the comparison tells you more than any review can. For me, turnaround time and vendor communication usually end up deciding it—if the better-looking one takes forever or ghosts you on updates, I lose interest fast. Also gotta shout out stealth packaging; that's something people sleep on until they get burned. Curious if either vendor came through on follow-ups or if you just pulled the trigger on luck. Let us know who you're reordering from.

I've been there too. The holos can look great on one but the weight or feel on the other makes all the difference for daily carry. I'd lean toward whichever feels more realistic in hand, since scans are easy to pass but the physical interaction is harder to fake. Which one had better vendor communication when you pulled the trigger? That usually swayed me more than expected.

So did both of them scan correctly on IDVisor? That app's usually pretty unforgiving, so it'd be interesting to see how they stacked up. I usually run mine through there first thing just to spot any obvious flaws. Did one pass and the other fail?

Nice comparison, feels like the real way to judge a vendor. I've definitely had orders where one nailed the holos but the other felt way better in hand. For daily carry, I'd probably lean towards the more realistic feel over perfect UV—most bouncers barely glance at microprint anyway. Also curious how their order process and turnaround time stacked up; I've had vendors come through fast and cheap but that often shows in the QC. Did you notice any difference with stealth packaging or customer service responsiveness between the two?

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Honestly, from my experience, the hologram is usually what they glance at first, especially at the busier doors. UV only gets checked if something else seems off. I've had passes with decent UV but weak holograms get caught, but never the other way around. So yeah, definitely focus on the hologram accuracy first.

Interesting tradeoff for sure. I've been in similar situations where one looks better but the other feels more realistic. Curious which one you're leaning toward as your daily carry tbh.

That's a smart move. I did something similar a few months ago and it was honestly eye-opening how different the quality and turnaround were. Most people just stick with one vendor, tbh, and never get that perspective. Looking forward to seeing your comparison results.
