Photo submission mistakes that delayed my order

My first order took three weeks longer than it should have because of photo issues I did not know about. The vendor sent revision requests twice before I got it right. Here is what I learned so you do not waste that time.

Background problems

Almost every state ID uses a specific background color for the photo — usually light blue or grey. I submitted a photo against a cream wall under warm indoor lighting. The vendor rejected it. When I redid it against a piece of sky-blue poster board in daylight, it passed on the first check. If your state template uses a blue background, the background in your photo needs to approximate that. Vendors will tell you if you ask.

Lighting and shadows

Overhead indoor lighting casts shadows under your chin and nose that the vendor's system flags as image quality issues. Natural daylight near a window — but not in direct sunlight — is the most forgiving setup. If you only have indoor lighting, use two lamps on either side of your face at the same height to eliminate side shadows. The goal is even, flat illumination across your face.

Resolution and file format

Some vendor upload portals have a maximum file size, often 5 to 10 MB. A photo straight from a modern smartphone can exceed this. The fix is compressing the image or resizing it slightly — I use the free Squoosh web tool, which lets you bring a 12 MB HEIC photo down to a 3 MB JPEG without visible quality loss.

Submit as JPEG, not HEIC or PNG. HEIC is still not universally supported by vendor upload systems and will silently fail on some of them.

Expression and framing

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight into the lens. A slight smile or tilted head gets flagged as non-compliant. Frame yourself the same way a passport photo is framed — face centered, crown of head near the top edge, chin near the lower third.

Taking five minutes to get the photo right before submitting saves weeks of back-and-forth. It is the single thing most new members skip and most regret.
