Photo upload failing - thoughts?

My photo keeps failing to upload. Getting an error message. What should I try?

Yeah, I've run into this before. The most common symptom is like you'll hit the upload button, it'll spin for a bit, then either give you a generic "upload failed" message or just silently refresh the page without adding the photo. Sometimes it'll even let you select the file but nothing happens — no error at all. That pretty much always points to a file format issue, especially if you're trying to use PNGs.

First thing I'd check is file size too — even if the format's wrong, a massive PNG can still behave the same way. Most upload scripts have a hidden size limit, usually around 5–10 MB depending on the site. But if you're sure the file is small and it's still failing, format is your next suspect. PNGs often have transparency layers or high bit-depth color that these simple upload systems just can't handle. They're designed for web graphics, not the kind of photo submission these ID site uploaders expect.

The fix is simple: just convert that PNG to JPEG. Open it in any basic editor — even Paint or Preview works. Save as JPEG with quality around 85–90%. That strips out transparency and flattens the color profile. Also make sure it's in sRGB color space, not Adobe RGB or ProPhoto, because those wider gamuts can cause the server to choke. While you're at it, resize the longest edge to around 1200–1500 pixels. That keeps the file under 2 MB, which is almost always safe.

For prevention: just get in the habit of always uploading JPEGs for these ID photos. PNG is great for text overlays or logos, but for headshots and card images it's asking for trouble. Also avoid any weird compression like progressive JPEG — stick to baseline. And if you're editing, make sure you're not saving with any ICC profiles that aren't sRGB. That little metadata can break the uploader silently. Quick test before you go through the whole process: try opening the file on your phone and see if it displays normally — if your phone can't read it, the uploader probably won't either.

Try a different browser if it keeps failing

Make sure its under the file size limit. Try compressing it
