One of the most common points of confusion when evaluating card quality is whether a card is genuinely polycarbonate or just PVC with a polycarbonate-like finish. The two materials look similar in photos and under casual inspection, but they behave quite differently and the differences are detectable without any special equipment.
The bend test
Hold the card at both short ends and apply gentle lateral pressure. PVC cards flex noticeably and return to flat when released. True polycarbonate resists flexing with more rigidity — it bends less under the same pressure and the resistance feels stiffer, almost springy. A card that folds easily and flattens again is almost certainly PVC or a composite with a thin poly outer layer.
Edge examination
Look at the card edges under good light or a magnifier. Polycarbonate cards are constructed from multiple layers that are fused together under heat and pressure, creating an edge where layers are indistinguishable from each other. On PVC cards, you can often see distinct layer boundaries at the edge — a core layer and one or two laminate layers with a visible seam between them. This is the quickest field test that does not require bending the card at all.
Weight and density
Polycarbonate is denser than PVC. A genuine polycarbonate card at standard ID-1 format weighs between 5.0 and 5.5 grams. PVC cards typically come in at 4.3 to 4.8 grams. Without a scale the difference is subtle in isolation, but when you hold a genuine card and a PVC card simultaneously, the density difference is noticeable in your hand.
Surface scratch behavior
Drag a fingernail across a concealed area of the card with moderate pressure. Polycarbonate surfaces resist scratching better than PVC and do not show permanent marks from fingernail contact. PVC surfaces are softer and mark more easily. This test is destructive in a minor way, so use a corner of the card that will not be examined closely.
Vendors sometimes describe PVC cards as polycarbonate or use composite construction that blends both materials. The four tests above give you a practical way to verify claims independently of what the vendor says about their materials.
