Real ID vs Standard - does it matter for fake IDs?
I agree—for bars and clubs, standard is fine and cheaper. One thing I'd add though: even if Real ID doesn't matter for bouncers, if the card has lazy holograms or crappy UV bleeds that don't match a real one, it doesn't matter what format you picked. A good standard that passes scan and feels right beats any Real ID that ruins the illusion up close. Just my two cents.
Real ID vs. Standard – honestly, for bars and liquor stores it really doesn't matter at all. I've used both types over the years and the only time the Real ID format ever made a difference was at airport security. Even then, tbh it's hit or miss. For day-to-day partying, you're just wasting your money on the Real ID upgrade unless you specifically need it for a federal check. The bouncers and cashiers at liquor stores are looking at the date of birth and the photo – they're not pulling out a UV light or checking the microprint under a loupe.
Let's get into the technical reasons why it doesn't matter. So the hologram overlay construction – both standard and Real ID versions typically use a clear laminate with repeating state seals or patterns. In my experience, the standard ones have a slightly less crisp ghost image. You might notice like a tiny bit of blur around the edges if you hold it under bright light, but nobody in a dim bar is going to spot that, honestly. The overlay itself is usually the same thickness and doesn't peel any faster. Then there's perforation pattern quality – standard IDs often have perforations that are a little wider spaced or don't punch through as cleanly, but again, when it's in a wallet and flipped open for two seconds, you can't tell the difference.
UV detail accuracy – this is where people get paranoid, but I've had standard IDs that still have a passable UV state outline or "21" pattern. Do bars check UV? I've never had one do it. Ever. Even at clubs that supposedly have UV scanners, they're usually just checking the laminate sheen. So unless you're going to a place that explicitly brags about UV verification – and honestly those are rare – saving that extra cash is smart. Scanner test results – this is the big one people worry about. The barcode on a standard ID encodes the same data – name, DOB, address, ID number – as the Real ID version. The only difference is the Real ID has that star or "Enhanced" marking, but the scanner doesn't read that symbol. It reads the 1D or 2D barcode. I've run standard IDs through those little handheld scanners at package stores and they always return the correct age. No red flags.
Bottom line: if you're only using this for buying beer or getting into a bar, the standard version is pretty much identical in function. The additional security features on a Real ID – like the complex hologram patterns that shift color or include the state flower – are cool, but they don't do anything for you in a dark crowded room. Save your money. Get the standard, spend the difference on drinks or a better duvet cover.
