Ran into a situation where my order portal showed "shipped" but the tracking number showed no events, and vendor support was saying the card was still in production. Three conflicting status signals for the same order. Here is how I figured out what was actually happening.
Why status signals conflict
Most vendor systems have at least two independent data sources: their internal production/order management system and whatever carrier tracking integration they use. These systems are often not synchronized in real time. A human updating the order status to "shipped" in the order management system does not automatically push a tracking notification to the carrier system. The result is an order portal showing "shipped" before the carrier has received or scanned the package.
Vendor support often has access to the internal production system but not real-time visibility into carrier tracking. They may tell you the card is in production because their production system shows it as queued, while the order portal system shows "shipped" because someone updated that status field prematurely.
How to resolve it
Ask vendor support to confirm specifically: has the physical package been handed to the carrier? If yes, ask for the tracking number and the handover date. If no, ask for the expected handover date. This distinguishes between "shipped" as a status field update versus "shipped" as a physical package-in-carrier-hands event.
What I found
In my case, the order had been "shipped" in the portal sense — the status was updated after payment was received as a workflow step — but the physical card had not yet been produced. Support corrected the status and the actual production took another week. The carrier tracking did not show any events until the card actually left their facility.
The practical lesson: carrier tracking is the authoritative source for package location. Vendor portal status is an approximation. When they conflict, trust the carrier tracking.
