Rhode Island ID — small state, specific features

Rhode Island has the smallest geographic footprint of any US state but its driver's license has several specific features that make it worth understanding if you're ordering or evaluating one.

The RI design uses a gold and blue color scheme reflecting the state flag colors. The state name and "Ocean State" motto appear prominently. Background imagery includes a subtle anchor element — the anchor is Rhode Island's state symbol and appears in both the main design and as a UV-reactive element.

Security features

Under UV, the anchor appears more clearly defined than in normal light, and the background UV pattern includes repeating text that's invisible under regular illumination. The holographic overlay on current RI licenses covers the photo area and includes the state name in repeating text visible on tilt.

Rhode Island updated its license design in recent years to comply with REAL ID requirements. Cards from before the update look significantly different from current ones. If you're ordering a Rhode Island card, confirm the vendor is producing the current design version, not the older format that was retired.

Barcode and mag stripe

Rhode Island uses standard AAMVA PDF417 barcode encoding. All fields are present per the standard specification. The magnetic stripe is also encoded. Both elements are present on current cards.

Vendor quality notes

I've seen two vendor Rhode Island cards. The hologram quality was adequate on both but the UV anchor element was faint on one — present but not at the brightness level of the genuine card. The anchor shape was recognizable but anyone who has checked genuine RI cards and knows what the UV feature looks like would notice the reduced brightness.

Rhode Island is a less common order than major states, which means vendors have had fewer opportunities to refine their template. Asking for a sample or recent production review before ordering is more important for less-common states like RI than for Texas or California.
