Received a card where the signature zone looked like a smear rather than a readable signature. Went through the process of figuring out whether this was a vendor defect or a submission issue, and what could be done about it.
First step: check your original submission
Before contacting the vendor, I went back to the original signature photo I had submitted. Zoomed in to the maximum resolution and examined the signature lines. My original file was fine — the lines were sharp and the background was clean. This confirmed the issue was in the vendor's processing or printing, not my submission.
What causes signature blur on the card
There are several mechanisms. The vendor's production system may have resampled my image to a lower resolution before printing, introducing blur. The signature zone on some cards uses a different print layer than the main photo, and if this layer is printed at lower resolution or with different ink settings, it shows up as less sharp than the surrounding card elements. Occasionally the issue is a calibration problem with that specific production run where the signature zone was printed slightly out of focus.
What I did
Sent the vendor my original submission photo and a photo of the blurry signature on the received card, with a note that the submission was high quality and the result was not. The vendor acknowledged it as a production defect and offered a reprint at no charge. They asked me to confirm my original submission file was unchanged and had me resend it.
Prevention
Signature submissions should be at the highest resolution your camera produces. Do not resize before submitting — let the vendor's system handle sizing. If the submission platform shows a file size limit, compress with quality settings above 90%. High-resolution input gives the vendor's system the best available data to work with and makes defective output clearly attributable to their production process rather than your submission.
