South Dakota licenses are not ordered as often as California or Texas, which makes quality evaluation harder because there are fewer comparison cards in circulation. Here is what I found when I examined one side by side with a genuine SD card.
Visual layout
South Dakota uses a distinctive gold and blue color scheme with a Mount Rushmore background image that fades across the card. The background imagery is printed at low opacity on genuine cards so that it does not interfere with readability of the personal data fields. Vendor cards that get the opacity wrong look muddy or overly contrasty against the data fields.
The state seal appears on the right side of the card front. On genuine cards it is printed with fine linework that holds up under a 10x loupe. On the vendor card I examined, the linework was slightly softer but still readable — acceptable for casual use but distinguishable under magnification.
Security features
South Dakota uses a holographic overlay with a pattern specific to SD. The color shift under tilt was present on both the genuine and vendor cards, though the vendor card shifted through slightly different color tones. Under 365nm UV, the genuine card showed a background pattern and state outline that glowed distinctly. The vendor card showed these features but at lower intensity.
The barcode on the vendor card decoded correctly on all three scanner apps I tested. Data fields were consistent with the printed face.
Overall assessment
South Dakota is a reasonable state to order if you want something less commonly scrutinized. Vendor quality on less-popular states tends to be more variable because templates get updated less often, so asking specifically about when the vendor last updated their SD template is worth doing before ordering. The card I examined was solid for practical use but would not survive a detailed side-by-side comparison with a genuine card.
