State-specific ordering tips for first-timers

The state you order matters more than most first-time buyers realize. Here is a breakdown of considerations that vary by state and how to use that variation to your advantage.

Production frequency

High-population states — California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio — are produced more frequently by most vendors. This means more refined templates, more opportunities for quality feedback loops, and more recent vendor experience with the specific design generation. Ordering a common state reduces the chance that you receive a card produced from an outdated or under-tested template.

Complexity and verification environment

Some states have more demanding security features than others. California and New York have complex holograms, ghost images, and UV features that are technically demanding to reproduce. Simpler state designs — not naming specific ones to avoid creating a priority list — are easier to reproduce at high quality but may draw more attention in states where they are rarely seen.

Consider where you plan to use the card. A California ID used in California is normal. A California ID used in rural Montana might attract more attention simply because it is unusual for the demographic. Matching the ID state to the likely verification context is sensible.

Vertical format states

Some states issue vertical-format licenses to people under 21, switching to horizontal format at 21. If you are ordering a state that uses this convention and the card will be used in that state, the vertical format will mark the card as under-21 to any checker who knows the convention. Verify whether your target state uses this convention before ordering.

Recent redesigns

States that recently redesigned their license (within the past two to three years) may have lower vendor template quality for the new design. The old design is well-understood; the new one is less refined. Check review threads for recent production quality on any state that had a redesign in the past 24 months.
