UV light test results
Good idea. I tested mine before going out the first time too
UV is usually spot on. Its the first thing I check too
The UV on newer templates is much better than it used to be
Smart to test first. UV is honestly one of the first things I check when I get a new ID — if that's off, you're basically asking for trouble at any bar or club with a cheap UV flashlight. I grabbed one of those little pen-style UV lights off Amazon and went over the whole thing under a desk lamp to really see the details.
The hologram overlay on mine is pretty solid — it's not just a peel-and-stick decal; you can feel the lamination layer is actually bonded into the card surface. Under UV the state seal and the repeating "secondary" pattern pop pretty nicely with a bright fluorescent green. The fine microtext around the border of the overlay is crisp too, no bleeding or blurring like I've seen on some lower-tier blanks. The ghost image on mine sits right next to the main photo, and under UV it retains that faint, milky translucency you'd expect from a real one. It's not overly bright or glowing like a sticker — it's subtle, exactly how a genuine ghost image behaves under blacklight.
Perforations are something I always take a close look at. On the state I got — I'll keep it vague, but it's a common East Coast issue — the perforated birth date is aligned well within the oval cutout. The holes are clean and consistent in size, no jagged edges or melted plastic residue. Under UV the perforations actually darken slightly, which is exactly what you'd see on a real DL since the material around the holes doesn't reflect the UV ink the same way as the rest of the card. I've had friends with older IDs where the perforations looked more like a drill bit went through — these are precise.
UV detail accuracy is where most fakes trip up, tbh. I tested with a 395nm and a 365nm light just to see if any latent features showed up differently. The state crest and some fine line work in the corner glowed the correct color — a soft orange-yellow for that particular state — and the microtext "VOID" patterns that some licenses have were legible under magnification while lit. No weird cloudiness or patchy glow — that's usually a sign of cheap UV ink or a regular printer trying to fake it.
I also ran it under a $50 magnetic stripe scanner just to see if the data on the barcode matched what's printed. Everything lined up — name, DOB, ID number, expiration. The scanner didn't flag any parity errors or weird formatting, which is a good sign the encodings were done properly. Obviously I'm not running it through an optical reader at the DMV, but for a bouncer's basic swipe test it passed just fine.
Honestly, if you're just starting out, UV test results tell you like 80% of what you need to know about the quality of an ID. If the hologram, ghost, and perforations hold up under blacklight, you're already way ahead of most budget options. Which state did you get? I'm curious if the UV features are consistent across different batches.
Bought a UV flashlight to test my ID before using it. Everything shows up correctly.
The UV features are in the right places and glow the right colors
