Virginia 2026 ID — new design security features

Virginia released an updated driver's license design in early 2026. Most online reviews I found were for the pre-2026 design, so I tracked down information on the new version. Here is what changed.

Visual redesign

The most visible change is the card color scheme. The previous Virginia license used a predominantly blue background. The 2026 redesign shifted to a lighter background with a more prominent state seal as the primary visual element. The flag of Virginia and the state motto appear more prominently. The overall impression is cleaner and less cluttered than the previous design.

Updated security features

The holographic overlay was upgraded. The new overlay uses a more complex OVD design with tighter color shift characteristics than the previous generation. The previous overlay had a relatively wide transition arc; the new one is more angle-specific, which makes it harder to replicate and easier to verify quickly.

The UV features were also updated. The background UV pattern is now more detailed under 365nm UV, incorporating additional design elements not present in the previous version. A new UV feature in the photo zone was added that was not present on pre-2026 Virginia cards.

Laser engraving

The 2026 design uses expanded laser engraving for the cardholder's name and license number. On the previous design, only the license number was laser engraved; the name was printed. The new design laser engraves both, which substantially increases the difficulty of name field alteration.

Vendor status

As of this post, I have seen only one vendor advertising the updated 2026 Virginia template. Most vendors are still selling the pre-2026 design. The pre-2026 card is still in legitimate circulation since existing licenses remain valid until expiration, but ordering a card with the old design when the new one has been in production for months is increasingly conspicuous. Worth asking vendors specifically about the 2026 template availability.
